Finally found time to listen to your episode review. You're both starting to annoy me with how smart and thoughtful your analysis is. That's all I'm going to say. 🤣 Well done and I'm glad you're enjoying the season.

Chidi.

That scene hurts because you could tell Randy was irrationally holding on to this idea that Lex wasn't really dead. The fantastical zombie theory just lets him temporarily avoid thinking about the fact that he sent a guy down the street to his death (albeit unknowingly).

Mike Conlin

Yea come to think of it, my school didn’t either, just lunch detention.

Nyeisha Melvina Clark

You see I was thinking of suggesting that, but I wasn't sure if maybe one of them sets up before the other arrives, or the other is setting up the mic or something. But yeah ideally, if it was me and a friend recording our reactions, that's exactly what I would do.

TeaDrinker3000

Donut is such a legend hahaha. I love that scene and the internal conflict in Prez about it all lol

Karabo

Exactly, the scene hits hard

Karabo

Or maybe just switch to manual focus with one of them as a point of reference, it's not like they're moving a lot

HenryM

You're out of focus for a lot of this video. The auto-focus on the camera keeps switching between you two and the microphone on the table, even in the first 20 seconds alone you can see this happening. It would a lot easier if you keep auto-focus on, but switch to a bigger f-stop number (ie. smaller aperture) to increase the depth of field. That way both you two and the mic will all be in focus. I can't imagine this would significantly affect lighting or require you to move the camera position, as it's a small space you're shooting in and you're already quite close to the lens. It's not like you're standing 50 metres away in a field or anything. At most you may just have to bring the ISO up the tiniest bit, which won't effect your image quality, and that's assuming you'd even have to do that much which you most likely won't. If anyone else has a better suggestion as to how to mitigate the issue, let me know and I'll edit this comment to include it.

Prez is in my top 3 characters. He goes from taking out a kids eye to giving one clothes and food while trying to help many others. All of these kids he’s trying to help are in similar situations to the one the kid was in who he assaulted. It’s not even that he’s trying to make up for what he did he’s just genuinely changed from his mistakes and became a good person. Him, Dennis, and Bunny are the heroes of this show. Truly trying to help the kids and community as best they can. Chris and snoop are actually Just two grim reapers walking Baltimore. Him killing that worker made him have zero chance of being anything other than that. Pure evil. Unless he kills namonds mom then I’ll forgive him. Sometimes the situations they’re in are so crazy and outrageous to me I can only laugh. Like when donut unlocked prez car or them just casually pointing out the bullet type that was shot probably not even a street away from them. Randy’s situation is so heartbreaking to see. No one should have to be dealing with the guilt that they just basically got someone killed let alone an actual child. Sherod’s as well. He can’t even read and is expected to be doing like tenth grade work or whatever it is. That is so insane they are just telling him they aren’t going to give him a change to succeed but they have to do something to look like they’re trying. Michael wants to stay away from the “game” so bad but he has no other options. All his time goes to bug which makes it so much harder to improve his own life. There is nothing in his life that he can turn to besides this thing that is so very actively trying to recruit him, it’s a hopeless situation for all of them unless they can get lucky. Dukies seems to have the worst home life or at least equal to michaels, but at least he’s getting some help from prez🙏. Hopefully he can become who he should be. Namond with any other parents is a nice hard working kid but with Weebay and Delonda he’s just a corner kid. With them expected him to be one which is beyond crazy wanting the worst possible scenario for your child either dead or prison. They get rarely any to no opportunities from anyone besides the one that plagues every one of their corners and streets, and there expected to not take it? And then do what? nothing because they don’t have anything else. Then once they do that one opportunity they get locked up and lives ruined. If only getting these people help and opportunities was profitable then we would see instant change. The cops and politicians are so incompetent that its just funny at this point. There’s so much to discuss and so many layers in the show. This season is so depressing but also so good and its basically just getting started. A special piece of television.

What kind of people are we comparing The Wire to The Sopranos? 😂 At a certain point, a threshold of quality is met where comparison is made redundant. They're both literally regarded as peak television (alongside Breaking Bad), it's splitting hairs trying to compare these shows.

TeaDrinker3000

I love the scenes with Prez in this episode, feels like he's slowly getting to speak to the kids more and finding his way in the job. The scene where Donut opens his car and says "no problem chief" always makes me smile.

My schools didn’t have after school detention for reasons like this smh Prez is a great character in the show but hard agree irl wouldn’t be teaching, adore Duquan and Randy stepping in to be little sweethearts and set him straight

Fr normal kids worry about voodoo zombies but these kids stare death and murder in the face so early in their lives There’s no magic in the world for them Think it’s really fitting that Namond was the only one not there, he doesn’t see a body but he had the scene with Weebey talking about murder. The camera doing a slow zoom out on his face just to show how deeply this affects him kills me

space colon

It really is a Stand By Me moment! Except in this context they’re much closer to the bodies and killings… Hard agree on Randy…

I really adore Sopranos as a character drama, we get to see every facet of one persons life/personality and explore the failed notion of “the American dream” (thematically it feels a lot like Bojack/Succession with a big focus on wether or not people can change. They all explore how a life can be ruined by trauma and the pursuit of success at the expense of yourself and others) But I’m with @Chidi. and @ryan I just can’t get over how great The Wire is as a depiction of America as a capitalist nightmare This is a favorite quote of mine from David Simon describing the show: https://imgur.com/a/k8gZCxv

Happy to have you back! I agree that it's impossible feels like an impossible task to try to help some of these kids. But Prez and Bunny are giving it a shot and that's all we can ask.

PoorHector

It's a tough moment in the context of the show -- Randy coming to understand the weight of what he did is so heartbreaking -- but I also just love that the show gave those kids their own Stand By Me moment.

Mike

That poor woman, all she did was show up to work and now she’s dead for something that has absolutely nothing to do with her, Chris and Snoop are indeed just plain evil. The scenes with the boys are the BEST scenes this season. I just love watching all the boys whether in school or out even though it also breaks my heart to watch them. I love how close they all are and how they look after each other, one of my favorite parts of this episode was when Randy and Dukie explained to Prez why Michael can’t make detention, it was really cute to see them defend him and explain his situation. I also love seeing Prez learn more and more about these kids as time goes on, so he can better understand them. I can’t tell how crazy it is to watch the man who took a kids eye out in the first few episodes of the first season NOW being a teacher to kids, I mean he technically should never be around another kid again, lol, but for storytelling purposes it’s great. Each one of them boys’s situation is so drastically different and yet the same in the regard that they can’t escape it and it’s circumstances that were entirely out of their control. It’s crazy cuz this season has already been too much to handle and we’re not even halfway done with it yet.

Nyeisha Melvina Clark

The opening scene is darkly humorous but also depressing. The boys hear gunshots- not alarmed. Police siren- not alarmed. Then the junkie walks up and they assume it is a zombie and run away in terror. It shows that they are still just kids afraid of a monster, but also illustrates how numb they have become to the real dangers in the environment they live in.

Doug

eh, I would argue The Wire is actually better

ryan

Patreon should have included a vote down option as part of their facelift. ;-)

Chidi.

Totally sympathize with the political scenes being less captivating, helps me to look at the parallels between the behavior of the criminals and politicians That scene at the end when they all gather around the body is one of the most painful scenes in the show for me It’s really interesting that Duquan seems to be the wisest of the boys, he accepts truths of the world quicker than them and really tries to go out of his way to make Randy feel better in a way that no one else would ever consider trying Love seeing Namond apologize to Prez one on one, we get to see him genuinely concerned about Michael too. The slow zoom out from his face when he hears Weebey talk about murder hurts my heart

space1999

I’m glad we are back with the greatest TV show ever… behind The Sopranos of course.

Jack SV

Lola your hair is stunning! ❤️

TeaDrinker3000

Woop woop! Another good episode, let's see what you have to say about Chris, Marlo and the crew...
