And the fact that it only works in English doesn't make sense cause it's written for a Japanese audience. Whenever they do a play on words, they usually play with the different Kanji readings. Here's one that makes more sense. Gon's bday is May 5th. Which is Children’s Day. One Children’s Day tradition is to display dolls of Kintaro, a figure from Japanese folklore. Kintaro is a boy with superhuman strength who was raised by his mother alone on a mountain and so grew up in the wilderness making friends with and learning to speak to animals. Sound familiar? Kintaro in kanji is 金太郎, often translated as “Golden Boy”, with the 金 kin meaning gold. Kanji typically have a few ways of being read and another of 金’s readings is "gon."

2023-09-16 00:04:08 +0000 UTCThe origin of Gon's name is actually really interesting, in the original Japanese publishing of the first chapter his name is derived from the phrase " 父は去った " which was never included in English translation but roughly means 'My Dad is Gone"; a very deep meaningful phrase that's fitting for Gon's character; Togashi is a genius. Killua is just Killer.

Futurama surprised me because it's episodic and then suddenly throws out one of the best plot twists, which was planned from the beginning. I'm still surprised it had to fight so hard for more seasons, but also just found the perfect ending.
