Midnight mass Episode 7 Reaction

Midnight mass Episode 7 Reaction

Comments

I dunno if anyone sees comments on these old ones but Lola asked about Mike’s inspiration. Stephen King is that dude’s muse lol. This is basically the best adaptation of the book Salem’s Lot by Stephen King. Flanagan is a huge King nerd who has directed 3 movies based on his books already. He also just finished shooting Carrie for Amazon which was King’s first novel and he is working on Stephen King’s magnum opus The Dark Tower which is an insane fantasy series and is the thing Flanagan wants to do more than any other project according to him, literally his holy grail. He just released The Life of Chuck based on a Stephen King novella a few months back, if you wanna see a Mike Flanagan project that isn’t terrifying I highly recommend it. Those two fellas combined equals good stuff. Long days and pleasant nights!

I love this series but the only problem I had with it and it is kind of a big one. Was that they had so many of the actors wearing like "old age" make up at the start. I understand why and that's part of the problem is because from the very first episode as soon as I noticed everyone was in make up I immediately thought to myself "The only reason why you use old age make up is so you can make them younger later on" and then that just lead me to think "it's gotta be vampires" and that was like 30 minutes into the first episode. The reason why I think its a big deal is because the big "reveal" and overall story antagonist was really obvious but not by the actors or the writing but because of the production choices. I think there's a way they could've portrayed the healing and rejuvenation of the characters without having to rely on heavy old age make up. That's my only issue with the show, production kinda spoiled the story, other then that the writing and especially the acting are freakin amazing.

I think you’re attaching too much of your own feelings of why people watch reactors. I mostly watch to enjoy an abbreviated replay of something I’ve liked. And then if it’s a reactor with good insight then I can listen to their post viewing discussion while I work on something around the house. If a reactor I like starts watching something I haven’t seen or heard of I treat the same way I’d take a recommendation from a friend. I’ll file it away somewhere and then if I hear about it again I’ll look more into it. I would likely not watch something for the first time with the reactors tho as then I’d have to watch two things at once.

Luis

Very true! I have watched Korra, The Expanse, Mr Robot and FMAB with LM and I've loved those journeys. But I must admit I think I enjoy watching their reactions to shows I've already seen more. They say that you actually enjoy watching a movie/show MORE on rewatch - when you're spoiled essentially. I think that's true especially for the ones that you like the most. You can never get back the experience of watching something for the first time, but on rewatch you can really appreciate it more and that's what reaction channels offer me. I love reliving the moments and following along with the discussions.

When you look at Flanagan's influences and how he views religion, it's hard to imagine that anything about his work is nuanced or well-meaning. It's a ponderous, ham-fisted mess with regards to writing, and the tedious monologues do nothing but destroy the pacing of the show. I have no faith that the guy can write anything with any depth.

Aj

You claim it's "nuanced" but how come it got fundamental tenets of the Roman Catholic faith completely wrong? Ignorance is an excuse in my book but when Mike Flanagan touted himself publicly as being well read on the subject matter and his knowledge doesn't even rise up to the level of Wikipedia then I have my doubts and suspicions... The intended audience for the show are not Catholics which means its message is different to what some choose to see. Kinda like how in the end of the show everyone chooses to believe in whatever they like because nothing matters because pantheism? I know I'm in the minority on this, but whenever I look at a piece of art I defer to the author's authority over their own work no matter how positively/negatively I feel about it. So, in his own words: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/09/24/arts/television/midnight-mass-mike-flanagan.html

Orr Malus

That's true, I guess it's still poignant that it's the gun belonging to the person who shot and paralyzed her

Kara

HxH should be today.

Shivering King Banana

I don’t know if it would laugh or cry if that happened lol

cosmotron

@Orr Malus Right, it couldn’t possibly be that *you* fundamentally missed the point of this series. Nope, everyone else that enjoys it for having a nuanced take on religion, all those video essays analyzing it from people who grew up catholic or otherwise, they’re the ones who obviously misunderstood the point it was making. Couldn’t be you!

cosmotron

It's weird that it's an almost alien concept in this medium to watch a show/movie for the first time WITH the reactors. It's almost entirely about getting validation for something you already love. That's extremely limiting and inertial. If you like reactors, you should follow them along with their passions. That'll lead to better reactions and you'll maybe discover something new that you love ... AND you won't go in with all that emotional baggage of nostalgia where you're (maybe just subconsciously) DEMANDING that the reactors match your feelings about the thing.

Nick P

I’m praying for a double today or at least get HxH ╰(*´︶`*)╯♡

If you think Midnight Mass had a message different to "muh big brained atheism" you fundamentally misunderstood the point of the series. The whole dialogue is literally made up of atheism bulletpoints from over a decade ago: - we are made of stardust: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLPkpBN6bEI&ab_channel=carlsagandotcom - number of stars/galaxies in the universe: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJ_tZr0D2pk&ab_channel=XXXSDESDEXXX - neural activity at the time of death: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7AHpqstcDEk&ab_channel=Seeker - god is everything and everything is god: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVEeXjPiw54&ab_channel=TheSchoolofLife Must admit, this show brought me back to a very cringe period in my life haha 😳

Orr Malus

It wasn’t the gun that paralysed her. Joe told Leeza he threw that gun away, he couldn’t bare to look at it. The one on the wall was his dads gun I think he said.

Wanda Did Nothing Wrong

so excited that the bear is next, it’s such a gem and i really think they’re gonna love it!!

Sebastian

I mean did we watch the same show? Literally ends with the majority of the characters praying and singing hyms and the mother of the main character saying “God loves everyone equally”

space1999

I didn't notice either of those, good stuff

Kara

nah we have to keep the meme going by having a poll with Last Kingdom, Black Sails, and a third option that comes out of nowhere and wins by 50%

Kara

Ouf. Watched that one recently. Agreed. Also that ending...

ODIS

Hoping you guys react to the anime Psycho-Pass one day, or even the show Hannibal would be good.

MAY

Where does the inspiration of this show come from? r/Atheism: https://i.redd.it/qfaith5uh9w81.jpg

well, i'd say i'll leave a short comment because it's fucking past 3 am and i need to be up in a few hours and work all day... but you know me, i'm physically incapable of not rambling. first of all, i'm so glad you finally watched this and enjoyed it. ngl, it was funny as fuck watching you two get so angry. the fact that bev made a top two tier (even if it's of a hated character) it's fucking hilarious. yes, i agree with you both. both samantha sloyan and hamish linklater (bev and pruitt) were the standouts in terms of acting. both made and amazing work and they got payed dust my the awards 💀 the show itself is so good to me. at first watch i placed it between hill house and bly manor, but now i'd say that it's up there with hill house, maybe hill house winning by a bit. the thing is, with hill house i LOVE the characters and i have deep connection to them while with midnight mass, while i really enjoy all characters i don't have that love i suppose. whenever i see a picture of the crains in my tl i think "that's my family!" lol but yeah, at the end of the day, in terms of quality and value of rewatch they're pretty even in my book. about mike's future projects. he's adapting, or has adapted, since it should be released sooner than later, edgar allan poe's short story 'the fall of the house of usher'. pretty interesting story that i read and analyzed in college and i'm really exited for what he can do with it. and then he's also adapting stephen king's the dark tower, which already was adapted to an awful movie 😂 this project shoul be released later i think. probably many actors will come back again (i need victoria perdetti to come back and work with mike). i hope you react to both not too late... you made me wait a long time for this one 😭 though it was worth it. and lastly? (maybe i'll remember something tomorrow when i'm not half asleep). glad to see you decided to watch the bear. i binged it last week and i really enjoyed it though it reminded me a bit too much to my own job 💀 ps: loved the derry girls reference. milena breaking and saying which show you were watching next actually reminded me of clare's ratting out to sister michael even before you mentioned it lol

sand_fl

@space1999 I love how they didn't even see the whole deal with Ali coming lol, they were so madly heartbroken. One of my other favorite moments was when Ed refused to give into the hunger, that elevated his character so much, emphazasing how kind hearted Riley and his family were, despite of Riley's unfortunate decisions in life. I haven't seen The Bear, guess I'll do a watch-along with LM!

HenryM

…I mean if we wanna stretch things and add to the ERIN cinematic universe I’m sure no one would mind adding EINaR from Vinland Saga (who also wants to go somewhere beyond the horizon 👀)

space1999

Oh my goodness that final scene of them just hurts. Glad they touched on Hassan and Ali in the discussion they had, feels really validating to see LM and people in the comments enjoying the richness of the writing I think they’ll love The Bear

space1999

Nice catch, never made that connection between Erin and the angel's wings

HenryM

Whatever it is, we'll just have to grin and Bear it...

TeaDrinker3000

I agree on Pruitt's character, I appreciated him much more on a rewatch (not that I didn't the first time, but I became more endeared to him the second time). Sure his reasons for doing this were selfish, but that's what make his character feel more real, just a flawed human with many regrets who wanted a second chance. Him and Hassan were my favorite characters, and watching Hassan slowly collapse while praying next to his son never fails to make me tear up

HenryM

It’s gonna be a good time when you can finally watch! Honestly don’t know if LM have been this angry since breaking bad

space colon

what show will be after this one? anybody know?

Victor Radoi

Attack on Titan too!! 💁‍♀️😅 I'm now imagining the Derry Girls/AoT crossover...

TeaDrinker3000

Good on them! Everyone should really watch Derry Girls xD all these great shows with characters named Erin who wanna get out of their small towns

space1999

Such a good reaction series. Not a perfect show but so interesting. It seems like such an obvious twist on the formula (vamps = christian mythology) I'm shocked I've never seen it before. Dark ending but satisfying. the bear is soooo good lol im super hyped to rewatch

Kara

For real, everyone else together while they die (even Erin with her vision of Riley) and Bev all alone with herself, so good

space colon

I love these details, such rewatchable shows! I think it is super hard to compare or rank next to the Haunting shows. I think all of them do such a good job illustrating the beauty of life and love and communicating the importance of accepting your place in the universe

space1999

Omfg trying not to tear up So rewatch able with all the little details. Erin cut the wings of the “angel” which calls back to her mother telling her that Erin’s birth had “clipped [her mother’s] wings”. That and Leeza using the gun that paralyzed her. No forgotten details Amazing writing

space1999

Also, while I’ve never even heard of what you’re watching next, you making the executive choice to just watch that has me crossing my fingers that you’ll do the same for Black Sails when The Wire is over lol. 👀

cosmotron

I heard the bear was good looking forward to watching it with you guys, same as this show was an interesting piece.

Awed

Lol. I gave up on watching Midnight Mass but watched the last 3 mins of this reaction out of curiosity for what they're watching next! I'm in. Very in! So funny how Milena spoiled it haha

Camzeee

I always love seeing you girls shout out Derry Girls whenever possible lmao I'm so glad people are getting exposed to Irish humour. And Milena spoiling the next show you two are gonna watch next is so funny 😂❤️

TeaDrinker3000

Girl I've done kitchen work. I feel your pain.

TeaDrinker3000

Other scattered thoughts: From what I understand, when Hassan and Ali are praying together at the end it’s a little different from before, in that Hassan would be the one leading the prayer. This time it was Ali. The way the singing cuts off so suddenly is incredibly chilling and so well done. That entire ending generally leaves me pretty speechless, and I cry through most of it. You guys hit on a lot of great points in your discussion. And while it’s a tough watch rewatches are definitely rewarding, seeing all the little pieces and understanding them. The more I’ve thought and watched the show the more I’ve come to love it, and I liked it a lot already. Not sure how I would rank it compared to the Haunting shows - they’re all very different but still good. And I’m basically in for whatever Mike Flannigan wants to do next.

cosmotron

Based on their reaction to this and especially Bev, I'd LOVE to see their reaction to the movie The Mist and Marcia Gay Harden's character.

Damien Fenton

"mike, some therapy for you my dude"

Steven Jeanrolus

For me, Annie telling Bev she’s a bad person is actually pretty satisfying. More than if someone else had really yelled or cussed her out. I think because it was so polite and to the point, it was actually the most effective. Like her telling Bev she’s a bad person hurts Bev more than if she’d just called her a bitch lol. You can see it in Bev’s face. And of course so much of this show and episode has pointed at Bev’s hypocrisy. The ‘chosen warriors of God’ are out here eating townspeople while those that are truly upholding the notions of selfless love are doing everything they can to stop the slaughter.

cosmotron

@HenryM that woman knows nothing about combusting lol she should try working in a restaurant with all floor to ceiling windows, +35 C° and a lot of humidity. o feeo like one of these days i'm just going to melt and become one with the floor.

sand_fl

Even in a show with an actual blood sucking vampire, Bev is still the biggest monster in it.

Damien Fenton

Tonight is going to be a good night!

leonthesleepy

Can't turn out worse than Bev lol

HenryM

Wow early upload! This is going to make the wait to get off from work unbearable. Also is this the last we're ever going to see of the old camera? I'm going to miss Milena reaching for it to turn it off at the end of the video :(

HenryM

not you posting this while i'm getting getting dressed for work 😭 my villain origin story

sand_fl

im so thankful for my timezone i get to watch it the second it comes out

Masahiro Niizuma

Oh man I’ve been looking forward to this. Even though the ending is a lot, I love it.
