What's more interesting is that, at that time, this bible would've been written in Latin and both Sverkel and Snake are able to read and understand it. Thorfinn too. Has to be a little historic inconsistency for the sake of the plot. No viewer would mind.

Since episode 3 we've seen him asleep with the book on his face, or actively reading it by himself throughout season 2. Maybe it's just because it reminds him of Gramps, because he clearly has affection for him, but I think some of it was reaching him a bit.
