A friend of mine in cyber security worked on some projects with the guy that wrote a lot of the code they type at least in season 1. Pretty great how much they let stay accurate.

I'm not sure how it's unrealistic though? It's literally said earlier in the season that there would be less security on Christmas Day.

To repeat the brightness comment in the other post: I think the issue is gamma or contrast. Of course the brightness on your screen should be up all the way, but if you can adjust the gamma/contrast it will make the blacks not as black which should help too. If that doesn't help then the issue is how bright it is in your room, but putting blinds down or whatever to darken the room, while making it easier for you to see, could make it harder to see the footage (which would require brightening in post).
So whatever you choose is up to you, but I highly recommend going back to some darker scenes where you couldn't see anything and changing the gamma/contrast on your monitor/screen until you can see what is going on, showing an improvement over before. Then watch regular daytime scenes and make sure those aren't too intrusive. But you guys seem to not mind visuals too much (like sometimes I find myself getting annoyed by subtitles spelling out every individual sound effect but it impressively never breaks immersion for you two, so it should be fine, just don't make it too overexposed but enough increase so the dark scenes are actually visible)

I think their stated issue with Angela is that it was first thing in the episode. Look at the scene at the end of season 3 and I genuinely don't think there's anything that points to it leading to Angela's death. Believe Milena said that if they'd ended season 3 with Angela's death, or if 401 was predominantly Angela-centric ending with her death, they'd have liked it more.
Tyrell's end is certainly anti-climactic, but there's no denying 404 is his episode. There's much more time spent getting to the core of his character, why he's as manic as he is, and why he loves Elliot. The entire episode is basically spent prepping the audience for his end. As it stands, I don't really like 401 as a means of mourning Angela, esp because we don't see Elliot's immediate reaction and are instead thrust into what's ultimately a pretty unrelated, low-stakes blackmailing thing. Creates a disconnect in a way

I totally get that I don't want to take away from it, I just think that the truth in that scene would have been even better - there's far more tension there if the audience understands that they can't hear the guy walking towards them and have no clue where in the room he is - plus there's no dialogue in the episode so showing that environment affects nothing. It's literally the only episode in the whole series that gets me that way, and I actually also think this is one of the best episodes of the show as far as what it is trying to do. It's just it makes me pull faces :) The only reason I really mentioned it is a while back somebody was asking about accuracy and I said it's very accurate except for one episode where a couple of things are a little silly - this is that episode.

Ladies, I cannot stress enough how important it is for you fix your lighting/brightness issues before watching Episode 7. If your previous reactions are anything to go by you will not be able to see ANYTHING with the current setup you have. So maybe close the blinds and just increase brightness on your monitor/TV or something before watching.

This is one of my absolute favorite episodes of the show. I actually got to walk onto the set while they were filming his running escape sequence on 59th and 7th. I was just casually walking to the station and they told us to clear out cause they were coming through soon. What a pleasure it was to hear it was for Mr. Robot.

I find it so interesting that our opinions of Tyrell and Angela's ends are completely swapped, with me finding the former unsatisfying and sudden, and the latter fitting really well into the story and being almost perfect.

While the show tries to be as realistic as possible, it has to strike a balance between being technically accurate and the plot being concise and reasonably understandable by the general public. The show would have absolutely sucked if it was 100% technically accurate. The plot would have been overly complex, and would take double the amount of episodes to resolve, whilst the viewers would be bored out of their minds, and the actual story wouldn't have changed one bit for it.

was absolutely thinking the same thing, episode 12 and 13 were the same night back to back, they absolutely should watch them in this manner, and obviously knowing LM they will have a LOT to say about the series as a whole so saying to block off half a day isn't a crazy idea 😂

I could be wrong but I believe that Sam said they ran every storyline idea relating to hacking by experts and they did have to change scripts when the expert said something was too far-fetched or wrong. He did an episode of the writer room podcast that was very good.

A lot happens in this episode, including some vaguely complex concepts. The whole episode is a directorial flex, frankly, as is every episode in the rest of this season. I think just enjoying the ride is definitely the right call over trying to figure out what's going on, you just sort of have to let it happen. This episode triggers me as somebody who spends a lot of time in data centres - it's actually the only one that does in the whole series caveated by the fact it's otherwise a great episode outside of some obvious technical stuff - I always wear ear defenders because fans in servers are built for performance in a oddly shaped box not for quietness like a home PC is, they're only 40mm and they stack them so they make huge amounts of noise - the idea you'd hear footsteps is absurd, but more than that actually I think the reality would have been better as far as tension. As for what happens if - you think on your feet and you come up with a new plan and try something else. On hacking and whatnot - they spent a lot of time at conventions (particularly DEF CON which I've been to once and a couple of friends of mine go every year - sue me I'm on the other side of the Atlantic and Vegas is expensive) and asked for ideas. The fingerprint thing triggers me a little bit, by the time this episode is set those old fingerprint reader exploits were well-defined and well-mitigated - they usually look for blood flow these days or clever tricks with ultrasonics - the idea that a bank would allow their data centre security to rely on a fingerprint reader that weak is absurd, even if just a co-located POP for their VPN or whatever - also in the knowledge that somebody had been in there would demand pulling the server(s) offline, use another POP and probably destroying the hardware and rebuilding it clean and maybe admin doing forensics on other systems.

I just think this episode is neat! I don't have many great insights to add. Nobody does the showy, stylistic episodes better than Sam Esmail and Crew. There are a few contrivances but IMO fully worth it for such a unique and entertaining episode that also serves to move the plot forward.
One thing I noticed this time round was that we don't get any Mr Robot, except for the intro where they both burn the van together. It's a useful choice to preserve the 'no dialogue' but I'm thinking about what else it implies. Maybe Mr Robot knew Elliot needed some space after what happened with Tyrell? Maybe Elliot actively wanted to do this plan without assistance? Maybe there's some form of temporary unseen cooperation? It's interesting any way you look at it. This whole ep is Elliot and Darlene pulling off a fun Sibling hack and any Mr Robot would just complicate that literally and emotionally.
I don't know when the right time to say this is, but IMO you should watch the final 2 episodes of the show (4x12 and 4x13) together. You're just not gonna wanna wait. I'll post again in later episode discussions but you should block off like half a day to do the end of the show and discussion I think lol.

anyway, i promise this is my last comment. amazing episode and i loved the not dialogue gimmick but fuck it was a pain in the as to sync up with the full reaction.
also, i love darlene but my girl should really find a new way of living because anything that involved her being discreet is not up her alley. like, she could not be more suspicious even if she tried. poor elliot is always getting bodied every other episode, at this point i'm surprised he hasn't had a major fracture or something.
i need dom to pack up her family and leave, that woman cannot live under that ammount of stress, i think she's going to implode.
and finally, i really really hope they don't kill krista, that would be so unfair specially after sheila already dying on s1.

I was thinking this during this reaction. I wish they'd depicted this somehow, that room should be very loud. They wouldn't have even needed to make it realistically loud, they could have just done some shots of the fans and the noise and then faded it to comfortable level and the audience would know how loud server rooms are, it would have added to the plot IMO. AND ALSO they've already done this! In 1x1 or 1x2 Elliot and Gideon fly to a server room and someone is wearing headphones because its so loud
(I love the episode, it's just something I also noticed this time rewatching)

while I do personally prefer season 3's one shot episode in terms of the "gimmick" ones, this one does have a cool vibe where the lack of dialogue adds to the action-packed nature of it. super excited for what's to come
