I'm so glad you're both enjoying the show so much. The core strength of the game is the dynamic between Joel and Ellie, and they've really nailed it in the show. Even though you obviously get more time with her in the game just by nature of how long games take to play, I think the relationship comes off just as strong in the show as it did in the original.
I also like that they've given more to Maria's character here. In the game she's just Tommy's no-nonsense wife and she seems cool but you don't really see her having conversations with anyone. Between giving Ellie a diva cup, and the talk she has with her afterward, she feels like a much more real person and character here. Thematically, what she says is pretty significant too, which is another great layer to give her.
Can't wait to see what you guys think of the final few episodes.

No spoilers; its just a cool detail to know.
Many Voiceover Artists have acting roles in the show. Amongst them is original Ellie and original Joel. The former appears in episode 9 as a character called "Anna" and the latter is in episode 8 as "James".
Lool out for them as it is a cool detail to know while watching!

Yeah. I always thought he was checked out of everything, dead inside, just going through the motions. Tess would just point him in a direction and he would do his thing without any emotional involvement. As the game progresses he slowly gets out of his shell because of Ellie and becomes an actual living human person. His broken watch was a metaphor for him being frozen in time while everyone else were trying to move on and live life.
I thought it paralleled the gaming experience of your average gamer. In essence the game is an escort mission which nobody likes so once you start you're just going through the motions like in all of the other games you've played. But as you start getting to know the characters you become more attached to them and ultimately get more invested in the game.

Maybe not...It's been a while. I thought Bill was Pittsburgh and Sam and Henry were Cleveland but I have to check. I just know that they changed it to Kansas City in the show. Edit: yeah you're right. Sam and Henry were Pittsburgh. I don't know why I was thinking about Cleveland.

To avoid spoilers for shows I'm behind on, I typically just mute the name of the show and character names, hastags and even the acronym of the show on Twitter. Usually it's pretty effective, even If people I'm following are talking about it.

Joel’s character is a bit different in the show. He never shows any vulnerability in the game like he does in the show, especially the scene with Tommy where he discusses his failures. He’s more of an archetype in the game. Personally, I liked the change in his character because it humanizes him.

I don’t think they went through Cleveland, at least it’s not shown. After the death of Sam and Henry, it cuts to Jackson County, Wyoming.

In the game, you go from Boston to Pittsburgh, which is basically southwest along the east coast, and then after the 3 month gap they are in Wyoming, which is about a 3000km journey. So I guess the show wanted to have more progress. So they moved the Pittsburgh portion to Kansas City in order to show that they made more of the journey west. And if you like the interaction between Joel and Ellie, that's basically what the game is, between killing bundles of infected and sneaking around... Joel and Ellie talking. Ellie telling jokes. Ellie learning to whistle. Asking Joel if ice cream trucks were a real thing. Asking Joel about random movie posters....t's cute. Also, they have to work together to cross many obstacles. So there's a lot more interaction, but the show does have a little bit of that... Some of it was lifted directly from the game and some of it they added themselves. (None of this is a spoiler, because it's either not in the show or it's already been addressed in the episodes watched).

As far as I can tell, Joel and Ellie follow closely to the historical Mormon Trail on their trip post-Kansas City, MO, going the rest of the way through Missouri, Nebraska, to the Snake River in western Wyoming, where Jackson is.
