I was talking about the manga, not the anime.

yeah I'm not seeing what you saw with the series. It is forever a seinen and the latest chapters do nothing but reinforce that.

Seriously thinking I might be saying this is my favourite anime from now on, can't get over how stellar the writing has been since the second half of season 1 till now

*SPOILERS AHEAD*
@Pineapple
Here's what makes it more shonen: characters talk in movie quotes, satirizes movie tropes, characters make gaming references, characters start fighting with attacks that have a special name (typical shonen trope), parodies its own characters, satirizes its own prior justification (like the Norse mythology), violence becomes goofy and has no real consequence (main characters get stabbed, shot, burned alive, and a few moments later they're fine), random paranoid guy that intercedes at the worst of times (medieval Alex Jones), and of course the very existence of Ymir. There's a dig at the whole action-packed shonen archetype: the issue where our main characters don't do a single thing then in last page the author does a "Meanwhile..." meme and shows Sig having this insane Pirates of The Caribbean meets John Wick style of adventure. The manga even parodies its own message about violence with side characters rolling their eyes at Thorfinn and Ivar's debates. Bug Eyes is literally the satirized version of Thorfinn.
There's a huge shift in tone after issue 70. If you skip the first 70 issues you wouldn't miss a beat, it's like two separate mangas. You can argue what particular manga category they two parts fall in but you have to admit that the last 130 issues are far more appropriate for a younger audience than the first 70 issues.

Would you please elaborate how Vinland saga becomes a Shonen in the later story? I have never seen anyone say that before lol. I'm not even sure how you could even come to that conclusion. I mean you are correct attack on titan did become more Seinen, but at what point in the later story of Vinland saga did it become more Shonen? If anything the prologue is more "Shonen" then farmland, Eastern Expedition, and Vinland arc. I do want to clarify there is nothing wrong with Shonen just curious on what you mean

In my opinion, the story before and after this oath was and is a dialogue-heavy action-drama seinen. Only the action before this oath was simply much more frequent than now after it. In a shonen, you'd theoretically expect the themes to be broken down more and rely more often on blunt action to simply captivate viewers with flying fists, for whom the dialogue or themes the author wants to address fly over their heads.
[Minor spoilers from here on out.]
In Vinland Saga, however, action plays a very minor role now. It's now more about how our characters deal with violence and war, how they stay true to their ideals or even question them. There's a reason why some people are starting to abandon Vinland Saga: Because the dialogue isn't enough for them to keep up. That wouldn't happen with a Shonen.

This is the point in the manga where there's a huge shift in tone. There's some 4th wall breaking with Thors saying how everything up to this point was meaningless and nothing was learned, then Thorfinn complains that it's not even funny, then when he wakes up he swears to become reborn which is another way to say "rewritten". Based on the author's own words from interviews, this is where he originally intended the manga to start and it shows. Like others pointed out how in certain aspects it's the inverse of AoT, which starts off as a shonen manga and evolves into a seinen manga, Vinland Saga on the other hand starts off as a seinen and evolves into a shonen.

when i watched s1and then immediately started read the manga because i loved it i never imagined thorfinn would become probably my favourite character in all media. i started recommending it later because i actually started this show because someone here recommended it to me, but my point is that as much as i loved season 1 it's nothing compared to the love i have for the rest of the manga, so i started recommending it immediately specially for this moment. i knew you would adore and be as obsessed as me with thorfinn's character arc. the only episode rated higher on imdb is s1 finale. i would say this is probably my favourite episode of the anime, along s1 finale, but not my favourite from the manga. but it's still up there.
theres something so beautiful about someone leaving a life of violence and wanting to be reborn and atone for what they did. kinda similar to the show barry in that regard, thought the shows couldn't be more different 😂
and yes, some people have already said it but it's really funny how complete opposites thorfinn and eren's characters and stories are. while i've always said i'm not the biggest eren fan i've always admited that he's an amazing character that's extremely well written. both thorfinn and eren are two of the best written characters from the animes i've seen.

This episode really reminds me of the first seasons episode "Out of the Cradle". When Canute has the dream about Ragnar and then the Priest describes "Love" to him. Both characters coming to terms with a specific realization of who they want/need to be. Both wanting that change but going in opposite directions. Canute chose violence while Thorfinn chose peace.

people who dont like S2 are anime normies who only watch Shonen and have very small intelect, and are simply immature.

Another thing I really like about the episode is that Thors like Askeladd aren’t saying anything new. Askeladd is pretty much repeating his last words to Thorfinn (fight your true battle, become a true warrior etc) and it’s the same for Thors (you have no enemies etc). It shows that these words weren’t lost on Thorfinn, he just wasn’t ready to listen at the time but he is now at a point where he can grasp the meaning of those words and act on them

To clear up your enthusiasm about the writing: Yes, it was written down 1:1 like that. You are welcome to read Chapter 70 and Chapter 71 of Vinland Saga. Every image was simply taken from the manga, Mappa didn't have to do anything but put color and music over it. It's just a great story.

This show has gone to terrific territories that I did not expect at all. I'm super curious how Thorfinn's character progress further. Like, are we actually gonna have an anime protagonist that's not gonna fight? I really look forward to how this concept is gonna be dealt with. Pretty sure he's gonna be tested and challenged really hard in a time period like this. Amazing that an anime embraces pacifism unabashedly, especially for a Viking show lol, go figure. Really intriguing stuff.

I just love that Milena had a notepad and pen in her hand for this one. Also, name of the author of this story is MAKOTO YUKIMURA. This has been stated in comment sections of various reactions to this episode but i guess you should know it as well.
When this episode aired Yukimura tweeted "I hope people are more ashamed to be violent. It would be nice if shooting felt as embarassing as bare dick"

That's all we have to know what this story is about.

The word masterpiece gets thrown around too much but, this was one of the most beautiful episodes of anything I've ever watched. Thorfinn's voice actor even elevated it over the source material for me.
