This show is so insanely good. This is my first time rewatching it and I forgot how good episodes like this were. The other shows your watching right now are so good and this still stands out above all them

JATLA

That's an interesting perspective, thanks for sharing. I always consider Mr Robot a deeply human show but I guess I have the benefit of already seeing this episode. And I guess it's easier to focus on the character stuff and little moments when your brain isn't trying to figure out wtf is going on with the earlier twists and turns lol

Kara

Yay glad to see you enjoyed it Camzeee

Dustywood

This is my favorite episode of the show so far. It's so poignant and it just focuses on our characters and how they are dealing with these consequences. It feels very human which this show sometimes forgets among all the hacking, conspiracies and stuff.

Camzeee

First, in terms of good writing, if the kid was real, we will find there are great weaknesses in the episode, which are coincidences. When Elliot attempted suicide, a kid appeared out of nowhere to stop him, and as Lola and Milena said the camera took a wide shot to inform us that there was no living being near him, and when Elliot returned home with the kid, he discovered That his parents, who had just lost their eldest daughter and in a terrible terrorist incident, left their younger son, who may not be more than 12 years old, at home to go visit his uncle in another city that takes two hours ride from their home, not to mention that there is no logical reason to leave him in light of the circumstances that happened to them, and also we noticed that these two (the horrible parents who left their child) in Elliot's first meet with them were very protective of their son, so of course, after the death of their daughter, they would not want to lose their only son. We also have a coincidence that the son disappeared from the theater. When Elliott went out to look for him, he noticed two people talking about shoes, so he remembered the mosque, which has a law stipulating not to wear shoes inside, and at the same moment, a person appears out of nowhere to answer Elliot's questions and lead him directly to the kid's place (truck driver). very uplifting episode, and when we needed it the most. i'm still upset about trenton and mobley's death and i'm still mad 99'9% of the world views them as terrorists and blames them for the attack but at least i'm happy to know trenton's family knows she's not to blame and at least mobley's having a funeral even though his brother doesn't believe he was innocent. it's reall hard to see angela so broken, ngl, and i still think she's going to die soon, but it was nice to see the light at the end of the tunnel i guess. she has a lottle bit of hope, even if it's faint. and yeah, seeing elliot so distraught that he even thought about suicide was hard af, but seeing him find a purpose and bonding with trenton's brother was really nice. though i'm still a bit confused about the dud in the ice truck. darlene and elliot's scene warmed my heart a little. i wish they end up having a nice sibling relationship but given the theme of the show i'm not sure we'll get that. and again, to the surprise of absolutely no one, mr aldderson went to the movies with his only child, becaause apparently in his mind elliot is an only child. darlene doesn't exists in his head. that's really sad to see, it would be nice if by the end of the show we'd see at least one scene of mr alderson paying attention to his daughter. another episode without dom :(

Regarding the father and the Robot, at the beginning of this series, when his father fell unconscious, Elliot went to the cinema with the robot, which he also most likely saw as his father. The feeling that a mr.Robot was talking to his father, but Elliot came to the film with a mr.Robot.

Денис Кабанцов

This episode got me even the second time through it, it's such a heavy hitting episode despite no "action" taking place, a perfect much needed break in the middle of the series to re-centre on the emotional toll of the characters. There's something special about this show that just gets me right in the feels

Dustywood

@Crab - Pretty much summed up my childhood to a tee! My mum would tell us to close all the curtains if we were home alone / turn the TV's on high volume and don't answer the door / have the TV on to deter potential visitors etc @LM Reactions - That's fair, I was just poking some fun but you're absolutely right considering the social aspect of just coming out of a terror attack / their family being the pin-point of blame - very valid point

LM Reactions

Great episode and discussion! One thing I really noticed on this rewatch was how much this episode does to reinforce how shit the world and the city has become in the wake of 5/9 and now the bombings. I'm usually so focused on the story but I really felt it this time, the city is a dreamlike dystopia and its population is in morning. I forgot the Elliot/Angela scene was coming and then cried along with you both. Just sooo so good. imo Angela's choices make even more sense knowing what we know, that she spent her childhood doing wishing games, her mum promising her they'd see each other again. I wonder how many times she wished her Mom wasn't sick or didn't die. I wonder when she stopped wishing. my single-parent mum would leave me home for hours with TV and computer, food in the fridge, while she worked or did appointments. I think I was younger than the actor here too. maybe it was different back then and there are defo concerns with leaving kids unsupervised but also a little freedom and trust is good I think. I'd also walk to school and eventually get 2 (non-school) buses through the busy city. I think I was 11 when the bus thing happened. I'd come home with keys and unlock the house and be there for a few hours before she came home from work. It made me feel independent and capable, like if I got lost I could get home.

Kara

hey friend, please delete this and use ROT-13 to discuss anything relating to rewatches

The guy in the ice cream truck was listening to a replay of "War of the Worlds" which was a REAL radio broadcast that played in 1938 before TV shows really existed so they had "radio" shows families would gather around for. (think Ralphie with his BB gun stories in A Christmas Story, if you've seen that) The story was 100% fictional (an excerpt by Orson Welles from the adaption of the book of the same name by H.G. Wells) and talked of Martians that crashed in New Jersey with wild sound effects and various fake "interviews" from different specialists around the globe (as if it was being broadcasted from multiple locations to one station at the same time). The main point is, it was at the time super well told and believable to the general public and people panicked as they were hearing the "news" in their homes.

Ron B

I've rewatched the show a bunch and I think the kid is 100% real. They certainly throw dream-like elements into the mix but it's a lot better if he's real. The things he says don't make sense if he's real, and the episode is intentionally laced with dreamlike elements to include doubt. Some of the kid's answers only really make sense if the kid is real. Trenton and her brother's bond has been established since the character Trenton was first introduced, she's talked about her brother to Darlene before, and Mobley while in Leon's car - the character exists. The father addressed him as well. The most obvious clue, Trenton is her hacker name, she chose this name because it was the place of her brothers birth. That's the connection with her identity and her brother. What surprises me is that people don't realize what the kid is doing when he's answering Elliot's questions about "how he got there", they're taking his answers at face value and forgetting that it's a kid answering the questions so there's a form of sarcasm the kid is projecting as he answers some of those questions - it's really good acting on the kids behalf. Kids aren't the best for straight answers and if they want something (in this case brother wants to know what Elliot knows about his sister as his Dad stopped him from learning any new information by telling him to go inside), so he simply just tells Elliot he "forgot" how to get home just to bypass Elliot's questions so he can eventually find out information about his sister - kids love confusing adults in Q&A sort of scenarios because kids are well aware that they can get away with their innocence. You can tell this by the face he makes at Elliot when he slowly turns his head and says "I don't know" as it was not a serious answer, honestly that kid did a superb job in this role!

Dustywood

I just found this on reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/MrRobot/comments/96lchl/proofs_and_indications_that_mohammed_isnt_real/

ReeNo1500

He is 100% real :P

Isaac

This one helped me so much whenever I was feeling down. One of those therapeutic episodes.

Adam

The kid was definitely real, he was seen by the guy at the movie theatre. If people are packing it doesn’t mean they’re leaving right that instant, and the kid mentioned his parents had just gone to Connecticut to visit their uncle

Matthew Bitar

The kid wasn't real! The family was packing up and moving after their daughter's incident. Why would they leave their young child behind?

ReeNo1500

I agree with you and think the "someone I trust" line doesn't quite add up. Because we also have to keep in mind that for fsociety, Elliot = Mr Robot. When you have Mr Robot's level of crazy aggression and Elliot's level of distancing himself from the plan, it doesn't make for the most trustworthy person. But I just accept that Elliot/Mr Robot's motivation for 5/9 was the most pure of the group to Trenton (whose perspective had Romero wanting to be famous, Mobley wanting to be part of something and Darlene wanting chaos -- Elliot would be the only one who would share her vision and also be smart enough to trust with the information on recovering the data)

tom

It's not super obvious, I agree. However, she doesn't have super positive things to say about the other fsociety members. Given her conversation with Darlene, you can tell that she's truly motivated by the cause of 5/9. She likely had very high hopes for the future Elliot was building

Isaac

Main thing that confuses me about Trenton choosing Elliot is that I don't think the two of them have ever even had an onscreen conversation ngl

Myeh

On a second watch, so much is different. And hurts.

RocktSurgeon

You're not alone in the discussion of whether the kid is real or not. The show's specialty surrealism layered over realism makes it definitely feel like he could be Elliot's imagination, especially with the almost anachronistic dream-like moments when Elliot leaves the theatre. The show does this a lot with random citizens, especially in the subway (the lady wearing a VR headset and the person with a whole ass macaw on their shoulder). Regarding the kid being left alone, the show tends to attribute a high level of dependence and mobility to kids especially living in this city, like with Elliot mentioning running away and catching the train often. The scene with the lollipop and the pure innocence of "Because you said you were sick" gets me every time. And it's again embodied as Elliot and Angela reminisce on their childhood in the final scene. Also, the wishing game is a chilling recontextualization of Whiterose's "Did you ever think that if you imagined or believed in something, it could come true... Simply by will?" When watching the season, I also assumed Trenton would have sent the email to Darlene because of their paired moments together in S1, but from what we know it absolutely makes sense that she wouldn't consider Darlene trustworthy with the information. I'd suggest against dismissing the whole time/memory themes (changing the future / parallel universes / considering the past) as only existing to throw you off-course. There's a lot that can be read into it regarding the show's philosophy and the characters' psychology; as people have mentioned it didn't jump out of nowhere in S3 as it seemed, and it's a lot more than a red herring.

tom

The song as Elliot is talking to Angela through the door is also in another Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, another time travel movie like Back to the Future. Related, a reaction to Back to the Future would be great! And The Martian (actually a fantastic movie).

RocktSurgeon

Right there with you on crying for a solid chunk of it. It's so well done, and beautifully done. Just so much of it. Like you said, there is a lot of hope. Having lived through the response to 9/11 in the US with a close friend that lost relatives... as a high school student... the Islamophobia and the small spontaneous memorials... it hit close and beyond the pain that is there it also brings up guilt at the response that the US had to it. The show taps into a lot of real pain, and complicated feelings.

RocktSurgeon

That one is so good!

Me sitting here listening to ya'll "who leaves their child at home?" knowing that my parents did this with me and my siblings all the time lol. I'm going to guess that the car they were filling up with things to move probably oversized the backseat and probably had no room for the son for the shipment move. I get the concern of course, it's valid, to me it feels that sometimes there's times where the parents have no choice to complete their requirement for the day (whatever it is) and sometimes a child is left at home because childcare is so expensive in the West, daycare is unaffordable for many. But it's not also unique to just humans, all animals do this to ensure the survivability of their offspring, I've probably got a bit of a twisted view on it /shrug

Dustywood

Mine is the one where Joanna gets splashed with red paint and it's completely silent (well, there's some light piano playing but we can't hear her) and she's screaming her lungs out, that one is crazy.

Martin Nicholls

This episode has my favourite of all Mr. Robot intros, there's something so epic to me about the opening sequence with that music as we're watching the "3D" movie intro, and it pops up with the intro "MR. ROBOT - SAM ESMAIL" - just thought that was such an epic intro for a series

Dustywood

The whole episode is, yeah - most of the episode you're just wondering what they're trying to get at then by the end it's like, yeah, okay that makes sense and it isn't clear why. Some of the imagery in it is weird, like the Orthodox Jew taking a Coptic Christian (granted I don't think the character is but I don't think it's an accident either) to a mosque - it almost sounds like the start of a joke. You need a box of tissues to hand :)

Knew you guys would love this one, it's a much needed break from all the pain and trauma. Something as little as taking a kid to the movies and him giving a lollipop is enough to keep Elliot from killing himself and filling him with more resolve.
