2021-09-01 15:45:14 +0000 UTCI think Levi also tries to stop Erwin from coming because of how important Erwin is to Levi... that scene is so interesting because it's not just Erwin dancing around his true motivations at first. Levi totally is too. So they're having this conversation that on the surface is about what's best for humanity/the Scouts, but the deeper subtext is about what each of *them* individually desperately needs. Erwin wants to go--not because he thinks it's better for humanity, but because he needs to know what's in the basement. Levi doesn't want him to go, not just because he thinks humanity needs Erwin alive, but because HE personally needs Erwin to live. It's just such an artfully written scene with so many layers.

The people saw them as a burden who only served to take their taxes and lead their children to death. It wasn't until they defended so many from the titans and finally started to win that they gained the peoples respect. But if you think about it they have likely been fighting titans outside the walls for decades. I would imagine they had worse gear and tactics that took them decades to develop. If this attack on humanity happened earlier in the history would they have even stood a chance? All those lives spent and all that effort put in the entire time for the sake of humanity and yet they NEVER once got a send off from the people, only resentment. Such a great moment to see them on top of the walls ready to face anything.
