Stages 1 and 3 are longer in the Japanese version; they both have more enemy formations leading up to the boss. This arguably makes the game easier as you're more likely to have a higher weapon level by the time you reach stage 4, which is where you'll really start needing it. Also, most importantly, the Japanese version has a far less annoying enemy damage sound effect lol

SUPER E.D.F. is a SNES remake port of Earth Defense Force from the arcades that has some differences that enhance the game like new levels, new weapons and improved graphics, music and nice mode-7 effects. The original SNES game slows down a lot when too much stuff is going on. Now finally improved thanks to this FastROM hack. For those wondering, the Japanese version seems identical to the USA version and it's completely in English, but it has an easy difficulty option and let's you select more shields, giving extra possibilites for novice players not present in the USA version. It's not an easy game, so these extra options are a welcome extra.
