Yes that is what is disappointing to me about the anime, the explanations are very lacking. I need to visit the novels soon!

About each and every spell and technology, I never even questioned it in the anime because I remembered the novel being quite descriptive with everything spell related. Every spell is explained in a very scientific manner the moment it is used. And it bothered me a bit that this wasn't the case in the anime but never thought it was a big deal. Many of the questions you've asked are answered pretty much the moment you asked them, just not in the anime.
