A big theme in my life is, don’t wait until someone says that the moment is right. Do it yourself to get the ball rolling. This applies to all areas of life. We live in such a cowed, permission-based society at this point, it’s obvious that initiative must be taken. People are seething with fears of having consequences for their actions & just need the push. I started to understand this when the next generation of zine makers discovered zines in their early 20s & took zine making classes in college. Some of these generational differences are fucking wild. But pointing out or laying judgment on differences is not my point. My point is that most people are never ready for that scary, life-changing push, but it’s necessary. If you want to grow as a person & then have us grow together as a society you have to take risks. There is so much chatter today, people commenting on other people, that just serves as a constant damper for the ultimate enthusiasm of the can-do spirit. Our cities are stifled by this lackluster approach to life, this waiting in line, making sure this list of requirements is checked off. The thing is, while people (especially traumatised, terrorised people) do respond to the comfort of the hobbit-like existence, narcotised in their holes, they are still wild at heart monkeys that are just waiting to escape their cage when the door at the zoo has been left open. What I’m saying is the locks are just for show, the cage is mostly in people’s minds. This killing of the healthcare CEO is a great example. I haven’t seen a folk hero arise so quickly & so unanimously in this country. The only people I’ve seen be against it are out of touch, usually bad actors. It’s like the same system has screwed everyone over! I’d say that vigilantism is part of a stage in a society, not for use when a society is healthy, but our society is unhealthy & the will of the people is not being taken into account. This combination is especially important. There are obviously huge problems with extralegal killings, but as I said, the system is broken. We must understand this society, this system, this life as a constantly moving target & a static morality just keeps you under control.
