Added 2024-06-27 18:02:05 +0000 UTCI’ve been watching Portland & Multnomah County council meetings for the last year & a half. Portland & all the big West Coast cities have been going through a similar crisis of civilization. Portland, a magical blend of woke & white trash has had it worse. I took civilization for granted until I lived in Eugene, Oregon. I saw that nature would easily take over the city if you didn’t keep up with basic things like sweeping your porch or mowing your lawn, quickly resulting in the plants taking over. Trees would start growing out of the gutters if not cleared. While in Eugene, I was exposed to more than my fair share of anti-civilization nonsense, being that its main cheerleader: John Zerzan called that his home. As I have listened to all of these meetings I was struck that the subtext underneath all of the political mess is a core question about civilization. I became ardently pro-civilization & pro-human, because I just was before, but it wasn’t such a pronounced issue like it is now. To me it shouldn’t be a question, the meaning of life is to live, humans are important because we are humans, civilization is necessary because it upholds humanity. For some, human existence is a negative & they’ve been drumming that in various forms since people became self conscious. As the concept of original sin has been secularized into various philosophies & these have gained traction the argument for civilization, for humanity has become more & more important but not overtly discussed because it sounds so absurd.
