[DEVBLOG#61] Bio-engineering

Bio-engineering is a crucial part of our Insectoid mod and I'd like to introduce you to this concept.

Players can now obtain an incubator unit from quests and traders - it's a platform that allows you to combine various genomes into new, unique, never before seen insectoids.

Upon purchasing a genome (sorry, no way to extract one yourself, those are highly advanced payloads of DNA, created off-planet) or after finding one during a quest, you can now insert them into an incubator to create your own insectoid.

Genomes exist in three types: Royal, Drone and warrior. They can be mixed in any possible combination up to a maximum of three genomes per Incubator - and any combination will yield a different kind of insectoid.

Insectoids in most cases will come out of the incubator healthy and tamed, but in rare occasions they can be dead, sick, rabid or... well... I will let you find that out yourself.

Vat-grown insectoids have short lifespans - you can expect them to live for up to 5 years max. The smaller the insectoid, the longer it will live, with the biggest one dying even after 2 years.

As always, if you have any questions, let me know.

Genomes can be obtained through traders and quests, but no, there is no way for them to reproduce. They are however powerful and unique enough to make it worth it :)

This looks like a neat, simpler version of GeneticRim with insects, I like it! However, as far as I can see, it looks like having a mini insect colony would be tricky since it looks like there is no way for the bugs to reproduce. Is there any plans to add that or will it be more like a tricky quest animal to unlock?

1. Yes. 2.Maybe Nothing more to say yet xd

Our mod doesn’t affect infestations so most likely these mods should work together very well

How would this mod work with Better Infestations? Because combining them would make for a VERY interesting mod (Unless the features of Better Infestations are already going to be added ;))

Wow, absolutely love this! Already more than I could have hoped for with this. Now I have a few curious little questions, it's fine if some of them might be saved for a later devblog. 1. Regarding Mutations as the image says - does this mean I can give my colonists strange body organs/etc like bug claws or antennae or other weird things? Or is it more akin to a disease that just changes their traits or stats, such as making them think more like a drone and become better at digging? 2. Regarding tamed Insectoids, I presume they might just act like any other tamed animal, but I have to wonder. Can we create our own tamed hives? Such as little chambers akin to like an ant-farm for our pets? (I have to wonder if Hives are becoming more than just pits that vomit jelly and bugs. I'd enjoy if the wild insects actually carved out a little area and did things.) As in it would be neat to have your own Insectoid workforce that synergizes well with eachother. Slight ramblings, sorry. My mind tends to wander with the possibilities. I'm really looking forward to what else is to come. Keep up the good work!

Yes of course!

I'm assuming the plan is to make this compatible with Genetic Rim and it's various modifications, on some levels at least right?

A large portion of royal and drone genome based insects yields various resources, so I wouldn't say that we designed 18 different murder drones - that would be boring, we're not boring!

Oskar Potocki

Is it possible to make insects farmable for leather/chitkin/scales to make armor from? Would provide more incentive to get into the incubators besides making murder drones.
