[DEVBLOG#53] Helixien gas

Hello everyone and welcome to yet another development diary - this time focusing on a new way of obtaining power, planned for our Vanilla Furniture Expanded - Power module.

Helixien gas is a new dirty fuel type available in Vanilla Power Expanded. A large sized map will contain between one to three Helixien Gas vents. Once a pump is constructed, it needs to be connected to other structures of this chain using gas pipes - which work in a similar way to cables. Helixien gas can be used to directly power certain workbenches, but can also be turned into electricity when plugged into a Helixien generator.

Helixien pump:

Helixien pump is a 3x3 structure place-able only on helixien gas vents. A singular helixien pump generates 100 helixien gas units. Whilst by itself the pump cannot power anything, when connected with gas pipes, it is able to power several different structures. Helixien pump costs 8 components and 400 steel to construct. It unlocks with a new Gas power research project.

Gas pipes and gas valves:

Gas pipes operate in a similar way as a conduit - they can be placed underneath walls, and they connect different elements of the gas power chain. If a shot lands on the gas pipe, it can trigger a fuse with a detonation timer, same way turrets can explode when on low health. Gas pipes cost steel to create. They unlock with a new Gas power research project.

Gas powered crematorium:

A gas powered version of an electric crematorium. Needs to be connected directly with gas pipes.  Uses the same code as Vanilla Furniture Expanded - Production workbenches in order to copy the bills over from a normal crematorium. Uses 10 gas units. Costs the same as a normal electric crematorium and unlocks with the same research project.

Gas stove:

A gas powered version of an electric stove. Needs to be connected directly with gas pipes. Uses the same code as Vanilla Furniture Expanded - Production workbenches in order to copy the bills over from a normal stove. Uses 5 gas units. Costs the same as a normal electric stove and unlocks with the same research project.

Gas smelter:

A gas powered version of an electric smelter. Needs to be connected directly with gas pipes. Uses the same code as Vanilla Furniture Expanded - Production workbenches in order to copy the bills over from a normal smelter. Uses 5 gas units. Costs the same as a normal electric smelter and unlocks with the same research project.

Helixien gas powered generators:

A small and large versions of helixien gas generators. They need to be plugged in to a helixien pump or tank by pipes. Gas powered generator burns 5 units of helixien gas per day, generating a constant 1000W. A large gas powered generator burns 10 units of helixien gas per day, generating a constant 2400W.

Helixien gas tank:

Helixien gas that would otherwise not be used can be stored in gas tanks. They are prone to exploding when shot, which can lead to chain reactions. A single gas tank can store 1000 helixien gas units (10 days worth of gas from a single helixien gas pump). Gas tanks are essentially batteries for the gas energy system.

Next time you will find out more about our new pollution system, as well as advanced sources of power!

I just found it very fitting :)

Why is this gas named similar to your fellow mod author Helixien? :D https://www.patreon.com/Helixien

Christian G.

Yes of course!

Oskar Potocki

will we be getting a 1.0 and 1.1 version?

We even have a name for it already! It’s Ka-boom!

Oskar Potocki

I'm guessing this will have its own event of Zzzt (Conduits short-circuiting). But being a bit more impactful due to it being gas. Looks great btw. :P

This could be done with simple xml editing and changing requires researchProjectDefs :) As for implementing more things into our pollution system, we plan to keep it open to xml!

Oskar Potocki

I just shot Dubwise a message about this new pollution system. Would there be a way on this end to integrate things like his crude cracker and chemfuel generators into your pollution system? I'm excited by the idea of various systems intermingling like this and I just thought it would be really cool to see a more gradient power tech tree (wood burning->gas burning->chemfuel burning->geothermal->nuclear->futuristic for example). Also, how hard would it be on the user's (my) end to add tech tree dependencies between mods; such as I need your gas tech before I can use dubs chemfuel tech? I know I can RP it but I wouldn't mind putting in the work to make those dependencies if I knew how and it was within my capabilities.

Beautiful as always. I love the entirely new layer you've created here. A mix between a popular oil mod and steam geysers. Very unique, I like it a lot.

Neceros

Checked out the math, and it looks inefficient. do these appliances have an advantage with early research unlocks or solar flare protection etc?

Rinklestein

Super interested in this, was always wanting a more vanilla friendly Rimefeller with a Rimworld flavour to it. Do you have any ideas of weaponizing Helixien as it can become a source of pollution? Chemical weapons like gas and whatnot? And I'm curious to the conversion rates on the Gas to Electrical, I want to assume that it's more inefficient to convert it into simple power to be used on the normal electrical appliances instead of the gas versions, like the stove or crematorium?

Rinklestein

No need to make it mix into chemfuel (which is a fuel type) when gas itself is already a fuel type. It would essentially be turning one fuel type into another, and that just makes it less unique.

Oskar Potocki

This is so cool man. I feel like power systems in rimworld are so uninspired and this is something fresh.

Really good idea

Gergő Ambrus

So this could be an early tech of Rimafellar since this accesses surface gas and is more limited in it's applications. Have you considered a machine that mixes this and another substance to make chemfuel at a slow rate?
