Some Photos from BwPCon

This is my "yay I made it and only had to pull over and re-bungee the bike once" face. Luckily the bungees held when I kicked the grid wall which jostled the box which tipped the whole shebang over to one side. That was a wobbly ride!

BwPCon is a one-day outdoor comics fest organized by our friendly local comic shop, Books With Pictures. I think this was the first time Barry and I tabled a convention together since Fall 2019, but it still felt like something we do all the time.

You may notice some raindrops on Barry's jacket. An outdoor convention would have been lovely any other day this week, but Saturday we got two hailstorms, a few downpours, and some intense gusts of wind! There was a small river behind our table. We spent a lot of time holding onto the tent poles and diving across our tables to protect the comics. The staff and volunteers from Books with Pictures valiantly ran around helping us out using everything from towels to shovels. We got out of it pretty well, all things considered. The boxes of comics are okay. I may use plastic tubs instead of cardboard boxes next time.

Everything within BwPCon's control was great. That morning I participated in an "art battle” where four local artists paired off and took drawing prompts from the audience. They picked a winner by applause.

This was my crowning achievement. The prompt was "an animal that combines a tiger, a tufted puffin, and Tim Curry."

For the final challenge, the audience picked which two characters should be fighting. Each of us drew one panel of each comic. This comic (rat vs fish) ended with a cameo from the other comic (Santa Claus vs the queen).

“Santa vs The Queen” ended up on our fridge.

That was a great time!

I also collected some of my Abbott Elementary ink washes into a fan zine. I'll post a PDF of it when I have a sec!

Kevin Moore, who draws some of Barry's political cartoons, stopped by our table. It was an opportunity for all three of us to sign and sketch in one of Barry's books. I really like how Kevin wields a ballpoint pen!
