Behind the scenes on p180-181

I promised some details about this double-page spread!

Barry got the idea from a cartoonist named Gianni de Luca.

This Romeo & Juliet comic consisted of detailed backgrounds that often encompassed two pages. The characters appear multiple times, traversing the pages left-to-right.

You can see some colorized Romeo & Juliet pages here.

Barry put this sketch in the script:

He also offered some suggestions for background characters, including the child swiping his mother's coffee. It's really helpful that Barry can both show and tell what he has in mind! It can be really hard to verbally explain a page layout.

Barry linked to a set of photos from the famous Schwab's Pharmacy, and I did a search for "soda fountain" on Shorpy. Not every comics writer helps their artist find references for objects like soda fountains and light fixtures. I really appreciate it!

In a minor Passover miracle, Barry and I got the Seder table set up with time to spare, so we had a story meeting in the living room before the guests arrived. We've plotted each page to the end of Issue Seven, and have a looser outline to eventually round off this story.

In the meantime, I'm going to be tabling my first convention since Fall 2019! Naomi and I will be at VanCAF next weekend, May 20-21. Are any of you going?
