Hi patrons!
Here's a look at how this page came to completion.
The original script says:
PANEL 1
A shot of Turtle’s face as he yanks/brushes the sandwich away. He’s covered in mayo and mustard and a tomato slice is sticking to his forehead and bits of lettuce everywhere (or however you want to do it - the point is, he’s a mess.)
He no longer looks calm and civilized. He looks like he wants to murder.
PANEL 2
Inset panel overlapping the other two panels. The smallest of the three panels on this page. Lillian, wide-eyed and frightened, as her brain reminds her that her actions have the likely consequence of getting severely beaten and arrested.
LILLIAN (thought): Oh crap.
PANEL 3
Lillian, big in the foreground, running full-out towards the viewer. There’s a lot of fear on her face. Small in the background behind her, we see Turtle beginning to give chase.
I sent Barry four possible Captain Turtles for Panel 1:

...and he liked the fourth one best.
This was the original page layout:

After looking at the page as scripted, Barry didn't like having three panels in a row of close-ups facing the viewer. We went back and forth about it for a little while, and Barry sketched out a panel that looks more like the final one. (I think he suspected that I wouldn't mind redrawing if there were buildings involved?)
Here are a few Portland buildings I looked at for this panel:

If you look at the faint blue lines under the piano store sign, you'll see that it used to be rectangular, but I changed it to a curvy irregular shape at the last minute. I thought it looked more interesting.

Barry had a final suggestion on Captain Turtle's anatomy in Panel 1:

...and this is how I took it:

As always, I hope you enjoyed this peek behind the scenes! Thank you so much for supporting me on Patreon.
