Art I've enjoyed this year Pt. 2: Movies
Added 2021-12-28 02:05:34 +0000 UTCHello again and Happy Holidays!
After a long day of drawing, there's nothing better than flopping onto the couch and letting my attention be absorbed by a film. I think the relationship between comics and films, as a storytelling medium, is often overstated; comics that seek to ape films are often boring. Movies are time captured; an experience that happens to you whether you give it your attention or not. Relying only on words, composition, and pictures, comics require that the reader remain an active participant in the telling of a story. All that said, I feel like there's so much to learn about storytelling and composition through watching a great film. Movies, more than other comics, are probably the biggest influence on the type of stories I want to tell.
In no particular order, here's a list of film's I enjoyed a lot this year! According to my letterboxd, I watched 150 movies in 2021 so this list is a relatively small selection.

The longer I've been cataloguing films with letterboxd, the less inclined I have been to assign star ratings or write an in-depth write up. Art is so subjective but I find it interesting to talk about the experience of a film and "rate" it with that in mind. The numbers feel so meaningless but at least reviewing something from a personal place defines the parameters of the relationship.
Anyways, if I was pressed to choose, I think Evangelion 3.0 + 1.01 is my favorite film from this year.
Let me know what you watched and loved this year!
All the best,
Adam
