Piece of trivia: Beah Richards who played Mama Caleba also played Sidney Poitier's mother in GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER... released the same year! Two superlative understated performances. A special shout out to Lee Grant (Mrs. Colbert)... that woman -- who will be 99 years old in October! -- is one of the great undersung actresses of her day. The chemistry between Poitier and Steiger is a large part of why this movie is still so potent today... (Norman Jewison's direction and Quincy Jones' score don't hurt either). It's so easy to despise the racists in this movie (or in any movie... or in real life). The bitter pill is that these people are products of their social upbringing -- and that is what is so sickening.
