I am an elderly pensioner and praise Sagan (my clumsy little joke), I'm so glad that I clawed my way out of the Christian Borg about 20 years ago. Reading his book, The Demon Haunted World was a transformative experience for me. Immunity to televangelists trying to rip me off means that my supper isn't stale bread and peanut butter sandwiches or nothing.
