I draw in a shaky breath, then reach into my pocket to retrieve my mirror.
Almost immediately, Kierdan's face drifts into view on the stirring surface of the mirror.
Kierdan: Good evening, Raenelle.
Raenelle: ...Hey, Kierdan.
Kierdan: You caught me at the perfect time β my meeting with the Commanders just concluded. How was your day?
Raenelle: It was... fine. No, it wasn't fine at all.
A crease appears on Kierdan's forehead, and his face grows a little larger in the mirror as he leans forward slightly.
Kierdan: What is the matter? Can I be of assistance?
I swallow hard.
Raenelle: Can you come to me at your earliest convenience? There's something I need to talk to you about urgently.
Kierdan: Of course. Where are you?
Raenelle: I'm at Old Man B's. Near the magic shop with a giant witch hat in front as decoration.
Kierdan: I'll be right with you. Please wait for me to arrive.
As the mirror surface stirs and returns to a dormant stillness, I lower my gaze to the cracked pavement and slide the mirror back into my pocket.
