Only thing I can think of is that Esther gave him an extra boost of strength compared to her children, like Evil-Alaric. Aside from that, being a Hybrid, Klaus should have easily beat him. I would have loved to see Klaus bring out his werewolf mode (like episode 1x08). Inconsistency in writing, I guess...? Who knows.
