2025-10-07 23:15:57 +0000 UTCIn case anyone's curious, I can provide an explanation for some of the times when they change one Japanese name to another. One reason why, like what likely happened in changing Kyo to Koga was it's likely the localizers thought it would be difficult for kids in the west to pronounce, at least back then. As for the Yagami/Kamiya think from the movie, that's simple and mundane. The translator screwed up and translated the kanji in the wrong order, so Yagami got to changed to Kamiya, and they likely didn't catch that until after trademarks and stuff were filed, so they had to stick with it for consistency. And if you think it's unlikely it'd get that far, I'd point out that Digimon's dub was done by Saban, the same company that didn't realize the implications of making a black guy the black ranger and the Asian girl the yellow ranger in Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers until about ten eps in.
