I got curious so I looked up the Australian age of consent laws since you mentioned it - and it seems to vary slightly throughout Australian territories but as a whole it's 16-17 for it to be legal to have sexual relations with someone of any age also of or over the age of consent - though there is a specific law banning adults in supervisory positions over the younger individual (teachers, step parents, preachers/religious leaders, medical practitioners, or employers) from sleeping with 16 or 17 year olds, even if it would otherwise be legal. So still illegal either way.
For the US it varies A LOT by state. Currently in California it's a hard cut off at 18. So it's actually even illegal for 16 and 17 year olds to have sex with each other, much less someone over 18. Just, you would have to be charged with it (probably meaning someone's parents would HATE them) and it's only a misdemeanor if they're the same age or within 3 years of the same age (15/18, 16/19, 17/20) π
You wouldn't think so from all the movies and shows set there ABOUT teenagers having sex, but there you go. So Miss French would be facing a felony if she still had limbs.
