Audiobook: A Modest Proposal

Enjoy, everyone. This was a bunch of fun to do.

As a bit of history homeschooling, I played it for my 6 year old. He flopped around a little bit during the first few minutes of the description of the poor, but caught wise once you started reading over serving up the poor as a delicacy and started to crack up at the reading. We had a good discussion about how Swift was using his words to lance at people in power doing nothing about a problem they were ignoring, and he seemed to enjoy that. Pretty decent end to a school day!

Thanks for not crucifying me too much for the language (you can thank my several margaritas), but as you once repeated under your Empress Theresa stream, #DontBeLikeNorman

What especially impressed me about him is that, in spite of fearing a Catholic return to power, he still steps forward (satirically, obviously) to specifically defend their humanity, thereby defending himself in a sense by demonstrating his own Christlike character. In short: yup.

For one of my Masters, I did an in-depth analysis of this particular satirical work, which I concluded that if a governing entity (albeit the English royalty) strips away the livelihood of their subjects, then they have a societal obligation to care for the needs of the poor, sickly, and destitute. Otherwise, for them to abstain from guilt resultant of their poor treatment of their subjects, what other purpose are their citizenry if not cattle desiring of slaughter? Moreover, I appreciate how Swift is a classically trained theologian as the crux of his argument to address the needs indicative of Jesus' character.
