let's start with some lore things. heka lives in a polytheistic underground desert empire inhabited by various monster peoples, a setting that kubi and i have worldbuilt from scratch. he is essentially a death priest. and by that i don't mean he's part of some edgy sinister cult nonsense - he deals with burial rites and mourning ceremonies, different ways to ritually and physically prepare the soul and body for the afterlife, serving gods that are associated with death, burial, embalming, exorcism, shamanism, witchcraft, and the desert. if the dead are not given proper burial rites, if the body is lost, if the dead are disturbed or disrespected, if they died violently, or carried a grudge, they might become restless ghosts or undead. it's heka's job to prevent this from happening - and to deal with it when it does. and so he also puts the ghosts and undead to rest (whether by helping or exorcising them), looks for lost bodies, contacts the spirits of the dead, and so on.

heka was more idealistic in his youth, and originally intended to serve gods of healing, health, and mercy. but in his travels he became cynical and disillusioned with people, finding most of them selfish, greedy, destructive, and overall unpleasant. he decided to leave the living to their own devices and direct his attentions to the dead, instead; "the dead have better manners. well, most of the time." he is himself quite grumpy, abrasive, blunt, and usually keeps to himself. it's probably for the better that he didn't become a healer, since his bedside manners leaves a lot to be desired. 

he's a wanderer, occasionally staying a few months at a temple or shrine, but spending most of his time travelling the vast desert, going to where he's needed. one day he saves a moth spirit, sabah, from drowning in a well; sabah takes a liking to him and decides to tag along on heka's travels whether heka likes it or not. it takes heka a while to get used to having a mischievous travel companion (there's lots of cute banter), but he gradually grows very fond of him
