Couple of other things in the same vein. Notice that Bywater doesn’t mention Littlefinger in his list of those who might be to blame. And that in the list of Tyrion’s failings, while some are clearly unfair, none are about his short stature or unattractive appearance. He adds that himself. The small folk don’t get everything right, but perhaps they are correct that he’s more focussed on gaining power than governing well. It’s kind of an interesting example of real world politics. No doubt Tyrion believes he’d govern well for everyone once he has enough power to not be overthrown or undermined, but he looks pretty poor in the meantime.

2019-11-17 01:50:45 +0000 UTCTyrion IX - I just love Bywater telling Tyrion the facts of life on the audiobook. Sometimes Roy Dotrice just nails it... But moreover, is this chapter meant to be telling us that Tyrion is actually not governing well? He isn’t ensuring the population has enough food and as far as we know, he isn’t even trying. We all cheer when he has a win over Cersei, but is that masking a failure? Perhaps he is obsessing about the food situation behind the scenes, but given George’s interest in Aragon’s tax policies, I suspect if it existed, we’d see it. He could, for example, have tasked Littlefinger with negotiating a food deal with The Reach while he was sealing the marriage pact, or numerous other things - seeking food from Dorne, across the Narrow Sea etc. It just feels like he’s so obsessed with his family battles and some preparations for Stannis, that he doesn’t consider the small folk.
