Masterstudies are an incredibly important part of developing as an artist. It's sort of like the active pursuit of your own aesthetic sensibilities through the works of others. Something about a picture can really get the neurons firing so sitting down to figure out what is evoking that from you is a worthwhile endeavor. Eventually you establish your own voice or style by taking a bit from this guy, a bit from that gal, and filtering it through your own opinions and abilities to make something new.

In this case, I really admire the work of Gil Elvgren. Dude got "pretty lady" paintings down to a science. Something I really like in particular is his use of edges, and his design of shadow shapes and highlights. This is what I was trying analyze with this short study.
