The Doctor's vision of the world being consumed in flames was a reference back to the parallel Earth being destroyed in "Inferno" (also written by Don Houghton). As for his age, the production team around this time do seem to have settled on "several thousand years" (as stated both here and in "The Silurians"), even though the first Doctor was supposed to be around 650 years old, and the second Doctor's age is explicitly given as 450 in "The Tomb of the Cybermen".
