2022-06-01 06:51:24 +0000 UTCIt was an oversight by new producer Barry Letts that led to this story having a title that sounds like a band name. :-) The "Doctor Who and ..." prefix had been used on most of the scripts for the show up to this point, but had never appeared on screen. However, the director of this story, Timothy Combe, was also new to the show and didn't realise that the prefix shouldn't be part of the on-screen title. So when he supervised the recording of the title sequences for the episodes, the full title of the script got used, and Barry Letts, who was still getting himself sorted out in his new position, didn't catch the mistake until it was too late. After this story, the prefix was dropped from future scripts to make sure this error never happened again.

The plague outbreak scenes certainly do take on additional meaning and impact in this time of COVID - far more than when this first aired. Obviously they have to compress the timeline for the research, but then it is the Doctor who’s working on the cure. After all he did cure an entire hospital full of zombified disease bred humanoids in a matter of minutes with some colored water and a lift’s disinfectant unit! Regarding the dinosaur extinction event - the theory that this was caused by a massive asteroid hitting the Earth wasn’t actually proposed until 1980 - 7 years after this episode. And they didn’t narrow it down to the Gulf of Mexico until the early 90s. So it’s no surprise they didn’t have that as the reason the Silurians went into hibernation. On to the finale!
