2022-05-23 02:24:00 +0000 UTCThis is a great story, and with the BBC deciding to strand the Doctor on Earth the writers had to come up with some inventive storylines that didn’t necessarily involve the planet being invaded every week. I personally like the slow build of the plot over several episodes, as it gives opportunity for character development and tension building. Imagine watching this as it went to air (as I did in the 70s) and waiting a week between each episode! I remember having great fun in the schoolyard speculating on what was to come. The support cast is also great here. I particularly like Fulton MacKay as Quinn. He has this ever so slightly sinister smile at times and plays shifty really well. I best remember him as the prison guard in the Ronnie Barker comedy series Porridge, but one of his last roles was the 1983 film Local Hero, which if you haven’t seen I strongly recommend (maybe as a reaction). Not only is it a wonderful film, it also stars a very young Peter Capaldi in his first ever film role (as well as Burt Lancaster). Also someone to take note of in this story is Peter Miles playing Dr Lawrence. He’s going to show up in future stories as different characters (something DW did quite a bit with guest actors at this time). Looking forward to the next installment (and just maybe the Silurian reveal?? Or maybe they’ll keep you waiting a bit longer!)
