Thanks Jason! That's actually very enlightening! :-)

Addition to my above post (as altering it tends to make the entire post vanish)- I dont know why they opted to change Jamie's clan affiliation to be on the Jacobite side, but if I had to guess I'd say simplicity. Even to this day the Battle of Culloden which ended the Jacobean wars is still thought of by many as a war between Scotland and England. The reality was decidedly more complex and clans lined up on both sides as this was a war about religion not politics (though the two are entwined, especially back then). My own clan, the Campbells for example put up 5000 men to the Government cause to fight the Jacobites. So I think it was just easier to have Jamie=Scots so he was on the 'scots' side with the Jacobeans and England were on the other side, rather than try to represent the much more complex situation that actually existed. Or its just a very clumsy mistake!

As with many others this is a favourite of the era. I love the opening shot of the TARDIS materialising in the puddle. A shot recreated in 11th Doctor era episode Night Terrors. And for some Scottish trivia, as thats my part of the world, 'sassenach' derives from the gaelic for the Saxons (more properly the Anglo-Saxons who would go on to form the country of England). In 685AD the Saxon King of Northumbria (the north of current day England), King Ecgfrith invaded Scotland into Pictish territory, they were wiped out by the Picts and the King of Northumbria killed - this marked the last time the power of the Saxon kings of Northumbria ever tried to take Scotland and is one of the most important battles in Scottish history as had the Picts lost then Scotland would never have become one country but been a part of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Northumbria and so later incorporated into England. Thanks to the PIcts we dodged that bullet(well sword)! It was from the time of this battle the word 'sassenach' came into use, being an angelised over time version of the Scots gaelic word 'sasunnach'. Which was their word for Saxon. It later came to mean anyone not Scottish, a foreigner, though its still to this day used most commonly as a derogatory term for the English. The TV show 'Outlander's title could be seen as a direct translation therefore of the word 'sassenach' someone who doesn't belong there, is not from there. She is a sassenach, an outlander (I should note I've never seen Outlander but I assume the shows choice of name is not random and is meant as a translation of sassenach). Jamie is a piper, as established in the Highlanders, this is historically accurate as the McCrimmons were not so much a clan in themselves as what is called a sect- a smaller family group attached to a clan, in this case the MCrimmons were attached to the powerful MacLeod clan and were their hereditary pipers, passed down from father to son (although the show gets this bit wrong and has his clan attached to the Mclarens for some reason). I was always a bit surprised we never really see Jamie play the pipes, or even a chanter, especially given the 2nd Doctors playing of such an instrument. They missed a trick there.Jamie was fighting in the Jacobean wars when he met the Doctor, as he was on the MacLeod side that means he was against the Jacobites and on the protestant side and working with the English government to stop Bonnie Prince Charlie reclaiming the Scottish throne and making Scotland catholic, he should be on the same side as the Red Coat he meets, however as the show wrongly has his clan attached to the Mclarens he would have been fighting FOR the Jacobites hence to the Red Coat he is a catholic rebel (though the show tends to gloss over a lot of that more heated religious stuff anyway). Here ends your history lesson! :)
