"Well, it's all quite logical really. Hardly any calculation needed at all. Except for simple stuff like speed, angle of descent and relative positions of the spaceships--"

The reason Jamie is mostly absent from these last two episodes was to give the actor a holiday. With the 1960s production treadmill of producing an episode a week for most of the year, the only way the regular actors could take a brief break during the season was for their characters to drop out of the story for an episode or two. It happened earlier in this story with Zoe, who doesn't appear in Episode Three (apart from a brief shot of her feather boa!), allowing Wendy Padbury to take a week off. Here, Jamie is put out of action early in Episode Seven with a gunshot wound, and is not seen again until the goodbye scene of Episode Eight (which was shot as part of the location pre-filming for the story, done before any of the episodes went into the studio). The next year with Season 7, the number of episodes made per year was sharply reduced to 25 (partly as a result of Patrick Troughton's complaints of exhaustion around the time of "The Mind Robber"). That meant that everyone could catch their breath between stories, and regular characters would no longer mysteriously go missing in the middle of a story. With a slight increase to 26 episodes a year from Season 9 onwards (because they had by then switched to rehearsing and recording episodes in pairs, taking a fortnight for each pair, as opposed to recording each single episode in a week), this would become the standard season length for the next fifteen years.

Love this story. It's really interesting to watch our protagonists scramble to try and take some action, only to be beaten to the punch by Vaughn and the Cybermen. It's not often we get to see the villains get such a powerful, victorious moment. Even if it is only very temporary.
