Neat! Yeah, I'm an American who's never been to London (well, I've changed planes at Gatwick -- BUT STILL!), so it's good to learn the trivia about it. :)

This episode was broadcast in 1966 so it was brand new and full of 'advanced' communications technology of the day and was a big deal well reported on and known by everyone. Perfect setting for a Who story of the time. London landmarks have continued to be be used in NuWho as the home of original Torchwood in Canary Wharf, the GI in the London Needle and UNIT in the Tower of London.

2021-11-01 03:22:30 +0000 UTCOh, and yes that's a real building. I think it's called 'The Post Office Tower' and was pretty new at the time (hence, a bit 'scary' to the London public). According to the Doctor Who wiki: 'The idea for this story came about when Kit Pedler was being interviewed for a position as science adviser to the series. The producers asked all of the interviewees what would happen if the recently built Post Office Tower was somehow taken over. Pedler suggested that it would be the work of a rogue computer that communicated with the outside world by means of the telephone system. The producers liked this suggestion and not only offered Pedler the job but developed the idea into a script...' ๐
