new painting!!

so I usually sketch out what I want to do digitally so I can make all my mistakes in a low stakes environment.... but I tried so many types of compositions and ultimately scrapped them all because I was too in my head about making a “perfect” painting.

It’s hard to one-up yourself when the last thing you did feels like the best thing you’ve ever made and I rage quit and started drawing myself (lain style) exhausted and art blocked at my desk... which then ended up looking the best out of all my compositions haha

The mental laps I did and then the release of that cycle helped me realize I’m better off just picking some photo references and photo bashing something.... I’ll hopefully figure out the rest later

This is the largest scale I’ve ever painted at and the first time I’ve ever painted on a piece of unstretched canvas. Highly recommend it! I went for a 74”x54” canvas (with 4-6” of space along the border for stretching later) and I’m pleased with the size. If I were to buy something of this size (if it even exists) the canvas would cost over $200!! The roll i got was pretty affordable for being 63” by 6 yards (18 feet!!! Or 216”) and I can get 3 of these massive pieces out of the roll. It cost about $150 :)

I prime my canvas w grey because it helps for my eyes to adjust to the colors but the canvas already comes primed with a layer of white gesso.

I decided to go for this scale because I recently saw the Yoshiomo Nara exhibit in LA (an actual dream come true) and every painting was like.... 12’ tall no joke. I would need a pretty massive studio to attempt such a stunt as well as a scissor lift but for now since I’m restrained by my childhood bedroom, this was the largest I could go!

I’m probably going to shut off July’s auto $$ collecting because I’m behind on monthly gifts but I’ll still be updating :) the high quality prints I emptied my bank account into are supposed to be done end of this month and I’m eager to return to NY first week of July to ship! Appreciate y’all’s patience~
