i knew you were gonna mention aqib talib when you said steve smith😭😭

chasealex

It’s crazy that bob hasent heard ignorance is bliss by kendrick man

Drastic oG

Like Water for Chocolate is definitely my fave Common LP

snooza

Eh, it might be intentional, but I think it's generally a weakness in (especially) his early works. I don't think it's a case of not being able to rap fast, just that he has a tendency to cram a syllable or two more into his lines than what works for the flow. Great lyricist, but he's not perfect.

Bakke

Loved the reaction Bob! I’ve been advocating for Black on Both Sides since I found your channel and this just makes me more excited for when you get around to it. This album (and others) changed my life as it helped open my eyes to power structures in society and led me on a path to studying social sciences. It was great seeing what lines/themes resonated with you and hearing you breakdown the lyrics. I picked up some new perspectives on the album. Interesting that people are recommending Be as Common’s magnus opus. It’s a great album but the debate in my circle is always between Resurrection and Like Water For Chocolate. I personally love Like Water For Chocolate with J Dilla’s production edging it for me. Either way, I’m keen to see you react to some Common regardless of what album. Excited for Food and Liquor next week! Lots of lyrics to get stuck in to

If nothing new drops in January that is worth reacting to, Forever Story is on deck 👍

Bob_the_Poppop

Oh, right... I knew that was familiar, but it'd been a long time since I heard that name

Bob_the_Poppop

Booked and waiting for MOASS

Bob_the_Poppop

lol, lots of word play happening there for sure

Bob_the_Poppop

LOVE that track... so damn good

Bob_the_Poppop

Be has been on the list for awhile. Hopefully someday

Bob_the_Poppop

Oh, that makes sense

Bob_the_Poppop

Yeah, it's on the list, and my interest is pretty damn high after hearing this album

Bob_the_Poppop

Yeah, I think so too. I was kinda wiped out at the end lol

Bob_the_Poppop

Great line.

Dylan Woods

Huge vouch, incredible debut album. Isaiah Rashad is also heavily influenced by a lot of the rappers that Bob enjoys

Daniel Gonzalez

So in regards to your comments about Mos’ verse and Drake’s lyrics. I think Jay-Z has a lyric that most aptly explains the difference. This is off his song “Moment of Clarity” “If skills sold truth be told I'd probably be lyrically Talib Kweli Truthfully I want to rhyme like Common Sense (But I did five Mil) I ain't been rhyming like Common since” Artists like Mos, Kweli, Common and the like are incredibly skilled and phenomenal with the wordplay but that isn’t what generates sales. Drake is the type of artist who makes good music but it’s shallow as hell

SlumpJones

To your point on Kweli’s flow… it can throw you off for a little until you get used to it because his flow is definitely unorthodox and he sometimes sounds like his flow is off but it’s all intentional

Leverage

ooh this is a good one

Christian

Your Aqib Talib/Talib Kweli comments remind me of a line on the extra track off JIDs The Forever Story, hope you get a chance to hear it soon :)

Elliot

Second this recommendation, the Train of Thought is definitely where you should go next with Kweli, especially considering how much you loved the production on Respiration (agreed btw, in my top 10 hip hop songs of all time) Hi-Tek is so underrated.

Daniel Soto

Talib Kweli Reflection Eternal Train of Thought album is a classic with all tracks produced by DJ Hi Tek and Mos Def Black on Both Sides album is one of the best albums ever. Reflection Eternal Train of Thought album came out in 2000 and Mos Def Black on Both Sides came out in 99 🔥🔥💯💯

Livin Legin

That’s false bro his first album is reflection eternal also called train of thought and is a classic way doper than quality 💯 I used to bump dat album relentlessly and the features are dope too Mos Def, Kool G Rap, Xzibit, Rah Digga and others and DJ Hi Tek on the production one of the illest producers ever imo 💯

Livin Legin

Great reaction Bob, cant wait for Black On Both Sides! I would recommend Talib Kweli's Quality. Its his first album and its fire

Erik H

Ghetto birds= Helicopters 🚁 💯 Beast=Cops 👮 💯

Livin Legin

“Mickeys” is a substance u slip into someone’s drink to knock em out like made famous by the mob to get the drop on their enemy they “slip them a mickey” 💯

Livin Legin

Lib like the ad lib or like the producer madlib not taleeb 💎

Livin Legin

This is a classic real hip hop album 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Dylan Woods

Great reaction to a classic album. This started the short lived Rawkus era in hiphop that produced some really great albums. Pharoahe Monch's Internal Affairs being another classic. I can't wait for your Lupe reaction now. The fact you're a GME APE makes me love you more.

Jae

I've listened to A LOT of hip hop in my life, "You stoppin' us is preposterous like an androgynous misogynist, you pickin' the wrong time, steppin to me when I'm in my prime like optimus, transformin from rookie of the year to veteran" is one of the best lines I've ever heard.

Michael Smith

10/10

Isaiah Avila

respiration has my favorite chorus in hiphop, great reaction

daredevil777

Reactions like these is really where this channel shines. Some albums just demand this type of treatment. Mos and Kweli are two of the best writers this genre has ever seen. Common fits that description as well which is why Be is a must in my opinion.

Jonah Douglas

can't wait till you get to Black on Both Sides. Talib Kweli's debut album with Hi-Tek is great too (Reflection Eternal - Train of Thought). a second Black Star album recently came out last year, produced by Madlib.

snooza

B-Boy (or B-Girl) means breakdancer, also "breaker" for short. The beat is a little more uptempo for that reason, for people to breakdance to it...and the rhyme style by Mos and Talib were borrowed from "Stoop Rap" by Double Trouble (which was featured in the 1982 movie Wild Style).

Will H

Black Star is Hip Hop in its purest form. Great rhyming skills, and excellent beats. This album and Food And Liquor are the perfect palette cleanser after listening to Drake. (No disrespect to the Drake fans). Both albums are full of great substance.

Brandon Williams

Does anyone else wanna vouch for Cilvia Demo with me ⬇️

Bobby porter

I assume black on both sides is already on the list because its basically a more consistent version of this

hlep me

No no no. Stop the cap. The Ecstatic is ABSOLUTELY worth the listen and is the most underrated rap album of all time. Drives me crazy how people only talk about one song on there. Bob dosent chase views like that and I’m hopeful he gives the ecstatic a proper listen

Mahmood Al Mardi

Bob you should listen to this Song With Mos Def on a Madlib beat. I don’t think this album is particularly worthy of a reaction so you probably won’t listen to it otherwise but you’d be doing yourself a disservice if you never hear this https://youtu.be/nx1_yzq9cX4

Thesacster

Classic. A nice buffer between Drakes wack ass album and Food and Liquor. Lol not a drake hater but his albums are wack.

Paul Salvador Estrada

Perfect length album....it boarders on the line of too heavy for too consistantly long. If this album was 17 songs it would be very draining

John

TAH-LYB KWAH-LEE

I just listened to this but now it’s time to watch 👺
