Please do Awaken my Love! Kevin on Turning the Tables absolutely loved it and i think you will too :)

LP

I've been enjoying it a lot 'as is' the last few listens, especially the back end

Bob_the_Poppop

No, just watched it one evening

Bob_the_Poppop

Watched all 4... odd little things that they were

Bob_the_Poppop

I'm pushing him up the list. Hoping to get him into the rotation soon

Bob_the_Poppop

I don't fucking mind 👍

Bob_the_Poppop

Should be able to get it in by the early 2100's :)

Bob_the_Poppop

I'm slacking on the 'America' reaction. Life has been obstructing my progress on that

Bob_the_Poppop

Being aware of the whole picture now, I feel like this was a massive move by Bino to just... self-therapy. Give his mind something to focus on, process some of the feelings he had, etc. I imagine the whole project kept him pretty busy for quite some time

Bob_the_Poppop

AML will definitely happen. Everyone wants to see that reaction, and from what they say, I'd love to hear it

Bob_the_Poppop

so fuckin' strange

Bob_the_Poppop

hmmm... I'll have to ponder that one as I don't agree. But I'll let the brain chew on the idea for awhile

Bob_the_Poppop

Ooo, that IS a fun fact

Bob_the_Poppop

Just old man blabberin'

Bob_the_Poppop

haha, happy to finally get around to it 👍

Bob_the_Poppop

real fun thing - this album was leaked a couple weeks before it’s release date… by Gambino himself. and on the leaked version the final track cut off at the line “Eventually all my followers realize-“ i think it was his way of saying that his fans that just listen to his music and not really pay attention may never have that realization.

Antonio

one day he will do cilvia demo i hope 🤞🏼

Antonio

Very very very excited for you to eventually get to Awaken my love!

Adam

Dude Bob! go watch Atlanta, Donald Glovers TV show, the final season just started airing. He calls it hip-hops Twin Peaks, amazing show!!

Tribecalledjoe

I've been listening to this album ever since it came out, never once read the screen play or any annotations about it, neither have I've seen the short film, and even though i always known there are esoteric meanings throughout the album, I've always enjoyed the album without it, i think it's themes are very clear even without the specific narrative, i hope you listen to the album a bit more on it's own before you dive into the screenplay because i firmly believe it stands on it's own, musically it's also just a fun ride even without the lyrics, great album and a very enjoyable reaction which made me go back and rethink some of the ideas in the album.

Christopher Bloom

Really hope he'll do Acid Rap soon, along with The Waters by Mick and some Chief Keef for the culture, the Chicago mixtape scene in the early to mid 2010's was so amazing to experience

Christopher Bloom

A lot of the themes on this album remind me of Frank Ocean's Super Rich Kids

Christopher Bloom

It's a good song but definitely it's pretty far removed from this album cycle. Then again it's pretty stand-alone. I just associate it as something informed by Awaken My Love.

The Gr8 Scott

Did you react to this film?

Mike

I like bti but there's no denying that it's too pretentious, and you can understand who doesn't like it. Camp is very cringe, practically impossible to hear these days. AML is amazing! Gotta do ACID RAP sometime

Mengao

How many times Bob says "trippy"? I think it really defines vibe of the album

Denzhil

Some links that you might find interesting: - A series of handwritten notes that Donald wrote right before the release date of BTI. It tells a lot about his state of mind during the time of the album's release. https://genius.com/Childish-gambino-open-letter-on-instagram-lyrics - A pretty sick freestyle that was performed during the rollout of the album. Donald is characterized as The Boy here. He touches on some themes that are heavily featured on BTI. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NfM_fb1onoI&ab_channel=SWAY%27SUNIVERSE - Dissect podcast season about the album. It's quite long, but I think it's worth the heads up. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3jdIc1UhJPTtCTpU70XPxE?si=7f1e4b42ecae44da

Lucas Miranda

Anyone know Bob's discord link is or where to find it?

Gabriel Davis

My personal favorite hh album of all time. Right up there with Cilvia Demo. Thank you Bob as always!!

Sam G

Worldstar is a super popular website where music videos & a lot of hip-hop music has been posted over the years, but it also has massive views for the fight / violence videos that are uploaded.

Shutt

Please watch the music videos 3005, sweatpants, telegraph ave, and the worst guys

Jaiden

donald glover is such a talented dude. I wouldnt consider him one of my "favorite rappers" but he's great. he also has a lovely singing voice, he does stand up comedy, he's a good actor and show writer. I have huge respect for the guy. Awaken, my love is incredible to experience and it's completely different than this album. his most recent album is great too and his sound continues to evolve

Henry

I don’t care what anyone says I love this album and it’s on par with Awaken My Love! There I said it come kill me.

RINGER 13

Still waiting for Lupe Fiasco given how much you like lyrical deep dives. There is probably literally no better rapper to react to with the format/tastes you currently do/have.

Support Basic Science Research

i cant fucking wait for awaken my love, sorry for cursing.

Jose Garcia

All jokes aside, this is probably one of my favorite rap albums ever. It’s nowhere near perfect, and I kind of understand why a lot of people don’t like it, but at the same time I feel like those people just listen to it once without really paying attention, call it mid or corny, then never go back. It is definitely all over the place, the narrative isn’t all that consistent, and the themes of the screenplay are pretty vague, but there’s so much more to it. I think the messiness of it all is a perfect representation of Gambino’s mind state. There are so many tracks on here that provide a great perspective on what he was going through at the time. I was 17-18 when this came out and in a weird way, it felt relatable — even though it shouldn’t. But some of the things that he said just resonated so perfectly with me at the time, as a child of the Internet who didn’t know where I was going. I have a very vivid memory of driving home from work on a rainy night, just listening to Urn over and over and over again. This album has honestly touched me in ways that very few others have and I love it for that reason. So happy you finally got to this, sorry for the long ass comment. Hope to see you react to Awaken My Love one day.

VeganMilk

That was a super fun reaction and glad you enjoyed! Looking forward to awaken my love whenever that happens, hopefully before 3005 :)

Aiden Woodworth

gotta watch the video to his single "This Is America"

Logan Froese

Oh yeah and maybe for a bonus reaction check out This is America. One of the best music videos ever. I was microdosing acid at a friends house when it dropped and I think we watched it like 10 times straight

CRASH

Lol at people thinking this is mid, Camp is, this is not mid, this is a great album. I feel its more likely due to people want people wanting and appreciating Awaken My Love! more. Don't get me wrong which is great album but expect more of a love letter to funk and soul of that one btw I personally like his 3.15.20 album the most as i feel it is sort of a mix between all of these but everyone is different

Matt

I love this album and don't care about the kids that say it's corny or pretentious because usually the people saying that shit are themselves quite corny and pretentious without realizing it. This album is really just born of an existential crisis Glover was having when he chose to leave Community to concentrate on music, there's posts he made writing on hotel stationary that felt like someone going through a manic depressive episode or something. Then this album, and the short movie, and the screenplay all come out, and he makes several appearances doing interviews and freestyles always wearing the same clothes and eventually you realize BTI isn't an album, it's a piece of a larger whole of performance art. Does all of it land? Not exactly, no, it gets messy towards the end I'll agree, and a lot of it is vague and demands you look deeper into it so casual listens miss half the point. If nothing else, it proved to a lot of doubters out there that Glover actually is a very talented individual rapping, singing, writing, producing and directing all at a high level, and it was just a glimpse at what was to come.

Xavvi

I cannot wait for your Awaken My Love experience. Absolutely goated

Carlos Varela

i'm glad you really enjoyed it. It is definitely overly dense and i totally understand that criticism people put on it but once you read the script, listen to the album and just live in that BTI world it really becomes even more special imo. When you get to awaken my love remember to literally forget everything you think you know about gambino because it could not be more different than this album but thats what is so cool about donald glover.

Isaac Robichau

Not a huge fan of this album, and I got confused with this week's video and next week's. I thought this Friday was astroworld so I was kinda bummed when I saw because the internet. I'm glad you're finally getting to him though, I'm sure his fans will appreciate it. You should definitely listen to awaken my love next. It's not hip hop but you've done rnb before so what harm is a little funk ?

Genesis Osuna

For as much as u loved this Awaken my love is gonna be a great listen for u. It takes a sharp left turn from this but that's what makes it great......and the production is production I think u will really enjoy

John

The Fantano Drake thing is actually pretty funny. Drake actually messaged him first with that insult, expecting fantano to make a video about it, but instead fantano made a video saying drake sent him cookie recipes, so drake then had to share the messages so that people wouldn’t believe he sent fantano cookie recipes 😂😂😂

Bryan Torres

BTI is both enjoyable and mid. those two qualities can coexist.

Psykopomp

Btw watch Atlanta.

CRASH

Something to consider: The hip hop community did not accept or appreciate gambino early in his career. Most people felt he was corny and embarrassing and because he sang a lot, he garnered the same type of hate that drake received from hip hop old heads. This might be why a segment of your discord (I’ve heard your discord has a lot of old heads) were so against this album. And instead of eventually embracing him like the rest of the community did, they pivoted to hating on him because this project is “pretentious” because it has a script and short film. IMO he started making a name for himself with his mixtape Royalty. It’s got some features you might know like RZA, ghostface killah, Beck, Danny brown, and Tina fey (lol). Honestly I recommend you check it out before you move onto Awaken My Love.

CRASH

where have i heard that light sound that plays throughout the worst guys?

Joe Deighton

Fun fact: Ludwig is now famous for scoring The Mandalorian among much other work

Ryan Naylor

10 minutes of opening thoughts, bob is inspired today

Wagner Ananias

Huh... makes the whole thing even weirder

Bob_the_Poppop

You know bob got good content when he got me checking this page all day

CRASH

Super excited for this! It was my first hip hop experience and pretty much shaped my music taste for a long time. I hope you liked it :)

Athanasios Sarafis

Completely incorrect on the drake thing, fantano didn’t send him any messages, he made a video pretending to get messages from drake where drake sent him the recipe

Bobby porter

BTI is weirdly pretentious Awaken my love is easily top ten best albums of the 2010’s

Lance Boldman

Sick that ur listening to this album … just waitin for that JID forever story reaction ‼️

Maxwell Clark

Oh…oh my god. It’s here. I never thought I would live to see this day. It’s beautiful. Incredulous. Inconceivable. My word. Bravo, Robert. You’ve done it yet again.

VeganMilk

t. waiting for Yeat reactions

toast

Haven't listened to this since high school so this will be an interesting one to revisit.

Tyler Shobe
