I'm thinking of doing 2 or 3 panels with interactions in different locations on her way to school.

Sounds good, and I didn't intend to spoil. Also, not sure how far your taking the size but I think passing by a doll store would nice. She could pass by a window and see some little barbie size dolls dressed up there. Could be some cute foreshadowing.

MC feels a twinge of jealousy and says to herself "I wanna be like that"; and a tie in at the end could be her friends do that because she's been denied stuff and they're treating her like a baby...

Our main character then picks it up to hand it back and everyone is very happy in the scene. Mom is smiling because she thinks MC isn't much older than her daughter. ( Maybe the mom covers her mouth to laugh at the thought of two little girls helping eachother)
