IU - Golden Hour Concert (Mostly lol)

SOOOO ....

I did the first hour straight and then decided to jump around to songs I enjoy because overall her music is not really for me I noticed and though her singing is impressive, I wasn't constantly stimulated enough to watch the whole thing.

She's hilarious though and loveable but her image and branding is waaay too cookie cutter for me!

Enjoy!

IU - Golden Hour Concert (Mostly lol)

Comments

Ahhhh I love long comments never apologise!! Okay thank you for these recommendations !

Koko3op

Honestly even as a fan the golden hour concert pace was abit boring..i think its bc she mainly included her singles which are pretty public friendly and shall i say easy to listen to w really good lyrics ? If u ever wanna give her another chance i would recommend u love poem concert, i think the production on that + the setlist is so much better including alot of b sides plus the lyrics are translated which what makes iu songs iu songs Also i am sorry for typing too much 😂 But she’s Definitely not vanilla i think u just happened to listen to the singles but if u wanna see some spice in her songs/lyrics Check out bad day , every one has secret , 50cm b/w lips , jam jam red queen Basically the modern time album lmao Again im so sorry for the long comment & thanks for ur reaction

Lily Chumchim

this was one of the concerts where she said it felt like hell because of her ear condition and the humidity in the stage. she still did well though :(

Jessica Thirlwall

Great And I'll always be here waiting. Remember whenever you do get to it, The Dream Show Encore is the beat way to go

pup_kay43

Yess I think i'm definitely gonna give dream a chance too!

Koko3op

So just finished watching now. I have say I love IU and some of here songs (fave songs Love Peom, Good Day and Heart) but not as a casual listener. Probably like once in a blue moon type of thing. And I think that's what happened for me in this concert. The stages were great with great props, formating and amazing outfits but the music wasn't engaging for me nor was the performance. I think maybe it has to he for people with an acquired taste for IU's music indeed. EDIT: I think mature upbeat is more your style when it comes to concerts and fun. Just based on the previous concert reactions so far. Oh and before I forget P.S. Still waiting for that NCT Dream concert reaction one day😊😊😊. Still fighting for it😅

pup_kay43

I think I'll definitely check out the album! If it catches my ear!

Koko3op

Wow I'm so happy you checked it out! And it wasn't a complete letdown! Hehehe I think the concept for this concert was like... IU's crowning as a legendary artist in Korea. 👸 The setlist was actually insane, very demanding for her. Given the scale of the concert and her ear condition it's amazing how well she pulled it off. Now, to add to the "cookie-cutter" discussion, as a UEANA it's funny to hear people say that because IU has had her fair share of trouble for being too... audacious at times. Mostly for her 2015 album Chat-Shire. She wrote all the lyrics and not only was her title-track "23" polemic(because she was clearly getting rid for good of the "Nation's Little Sister" title), the b-side "Zezé" got her accused of pedophilia of all things lmao I laugh now but that was a tough year for IU, she basically got canceled. And still, during an end of the year SBS show, she did a performance of 23 which started with the sound of crowd noise(like people talking about her) while she wrote 23 on a glass board using lipstick lol It might not sound like much but that was like... an unthinkable thing to do and it definitely did not help with all the hate she was getting but I guess she was just done LMAO Here's a link(it's a must watch imo): https://youtu.be/aZGaSrI0RoY?si=-Cz4F0fzwzeO9gD4 No wonder she disappeared for a while and only came back in 2017 with Through the Night(which is now a legendary song in Korea). I would say she has a few songs which aren't exactly what you'd expect of her but those are like hidden gems. Her most popular songs are, unsurprisingly, her happy/lovely/cute songs and the beautiful ballads. So in a concert she has to give the people what they want, as they say 🤷 Thank you for checking it out! I promise no more IU requests from now on! Lol She has an album coming soon though so maybe she'll give us something different. She said the theme of the album is "desire" so I'm excited!! I'm hoping is desire, DESIRE not desire as in "will to do things" Lol We shall see. Thanks again for the video! It was fun! :)

Sorry for that, tried to edit and reword the snarkiness but couldn't quite get the balance with such a long post. And you are right, re-reading the post, I can see the inconsistencies in position as I worked out my stream of thoughts I do want to add though, that her public image isn't that reserved over the course of that long career. But, at the same time, its kind of vanilla. She is introverted, sarcastic, clever but she is quite conservative. A break-ceilings via observing norms type of person. So, I guess cookie-cutter is a suitable description as well. Perhaps, the question I am actually getting to in my head, is that most of the time cookie-cutter doesn't work. It fades to the background. But sometimes, it really works and connects to an audience and becomes something long-lasting. And then, how much of that is nostalgia? I guess I got to some answer at the end of my long post. Away from nostalgia, its perhaps the serious/delicate IU songs, that will be more interesting to examine musically

It's giving a LIL snarkyyyy friend lool bit surprised! This is my perception of her in this first time concert viewing and I even said I KNOW she's more than this but she has a reserved image for her public persona which is normal of course but with her it feels more repressive for some reason, the setlist didn't help. I've heard the Taylor swift comparison also. I definitely disagree with with the "she doesn't entirely come off as just pleasant to her audience" because I was a different kind of audience and that was my experience as a viewer on this occasion but that's subjective and was not the case for the en-encore songs. I'm pretty sure I also said her being vanilla is also reason for her success. And being vanilla is not different than calling her cookie cutter which you greatly explained so why the curiousity? lol you clearly understand how we can be drawn to that conclusion, it doesn't mean she's not a one-in-a-generation talent either so not sure the relevancy of that point. And if you yourself believe the dome is best suited for her I'm sure you can see why I may have felt a little underwhelmed so I was pretty fair in my critiques and perceptions but your comment to me feels waay much defensive than necessary.

Koko3op

I guess the setlist was chosen for the large venue, which is a usual problem with large venues and how they translate to video. Ironically, its usually the smaller venues that work better on video while the bigger venues work better in person I am actually thinking she will lean more towards winter sleep / pieces, type music on her next album. Though, I could very likely be wrong

Mint

THIS! I think I even said I KNOW she's not sooo sweet presenting lol. I'd love that too.

Koko3op

Yeahh maybe this was the wrong concert for me

Koko3op

First of all, I'm not trying to be snarky in this post. IU's music isn't for you and that's okay but I am curious when people see her as "cookie cutter", and I would like to spill my guts a bit here, haha I kind of understand where that feeling comes from as this type of music seems familiar. But, I can't quite name other artists who does it like this in Western music? Has it largely died out? Do we have a collective memory of when this type of music was prevalent? Do we now just lump all this under the grab-bag of "singer-songwriter" music? Anyway, that's why I still use the analogy that IU is the Korean Taylor Swift. Its not that their music or demeanor is the same, but more like she's the Korean version of it, with all the cultural differences that it implies. Back to the cookie-cutter point, I guess if you could pick a flavor to represent them, it would be vanilla. And then, you think you could find thousands of them and replicate it because there is a never ending supply of guitar-toting blondes (as they tried with Taylor). But as it turns out, they are a one-in-a-generation talent, with just the right mixture of "things" that connect them to their audience. And there is a large audience who likes vanilla best, when it works. For me, IU is kinda like that. I can't quite verbalize why but when she sings or performs, it just hits. It feels like home. And I think that's the difference there. She doesn't entirely come off as just pleasant to her audience. There is emotion to it, nestled in that safety. For this concert though, I do feel it was a bit difficult for her & her music to fill up this huge stadium. She went back to Dome for her concert this year and I think that's still the best size for her music Lastly, if you do react to IU again in future, based on your reactions here, I think you would enjoy serious/sad IU more. Though, that means digging through lots of ballads haha. Live performances of songs like Lullaby, By the Stream, Knees...

Mint

I type way too much.

Dory G

Yeahh this setlist was not it.. but I guess that's what got her popular so this was smartly chosen for gp/koreans. But tbf I feel like her true personality is more .."dark" than shown, like I just know she hates people, she be suing ppl who talk smack, she hates model/promo events etc but well idol image.. hoping we get to see sth new/more daring with her next album soon and I always go straight to b-sidess. Love that you gave it a try with your honest opinion tho! Would be weird to like everything

kendricklmao

This concert was also her first one since 2019. And her largest venue. She prefers KSPO Dome where she just did her 15th anni fanconcert (I had a blast). The concert is named for Eight since you were surprised that's how she started... she started with a song for her deceased friends because her last concert in 2019 ended with her learning about Goo Hara's death as she was changing for encore and she was still grieving Sulli.

Dory G

I like certain songs from IU but her type of music is an acquired taste, this is my first time watching a concert from her, and its too slow for me not something that would get me engaged to keep watching.

Ashley

Another part you skipped before My Sea was her explaining why fans saw her around a hospital and why the concert almost got canceled. She has an ear condition that causes her ear to block so not only can she not hear in one ear her head becomes an echo chamber which causes severe pain. It flared during concert prep. So IU was in severe pain the whole time and by Strawberry Moon couldn't hear out of one ear.

Dory G

Those are the last Palette and Good Day performances. You also skipped the gorgeous ending of My Sea. I'm dying that you called her safe because she's gotten in so much trouble and if she wrote the lyrics idols can't cover it right because her lyrics are too difficult.
