Regarding the last name discussion: The history of last names, really, comes down to culture. You've got Europeam cultures where your last name reflects your lineage; names like "Johnson" literally come from someone who was "John's Son" whoever "John" was. Other European cultures, especially during the dark ages where record keeping was few and far between, your family name would reflect your family's trade. If you were the son of a blacksmith, your last name would be Smith. If you worked the docks, your last name would be Fisher. Other cultures didn't have last names. Ultimately, I think it was just a way to track lineage or familial connection in one form or another. And family ties were huge parts of probably all recorded cultures in history. It's subtle in Game of Thrones, but you can catch certain scenes where they talk about house sigils. And they mention that Rob Baratheon's house sigil is a stag, but it changed when he became King to a crowned stag. House sigils/Coats of Arms reflect the honors and accolades of the house that earned them. An arm in plate mail was representative of a family of knights. Even the colors of your Coat of Arms had meaning. And your coat of arms was essentially your pedigree/heraldry. It told the story of your family, and with combinations of other heraldry customs of other cultures, we are now left with the patriarchical system of last names being passed on by male offspring, for no other reason than tradition.
