Not that I believe that surrender is much of an option I this conflict.

Michael Pettersson

...Or has taken inside itself a Trojan.

Astronautty

While it's not strictly impossible, it would be so difficult that no one would dare attempt it. During combat, ships constantly vary thrust and direction to help throw off enemy weapons targeting; this would be very difficult for any boarding craft to match, and even a relatively small discrepancy could result in a very high-energy collision given the large accelerations involved. And this is ignoring the ship's point-defense weaponry. So unless the ship was for some reason accelerating at a constant rate without change, this wouldn't be a practical possibility. Boardings can really only happen when the target vessel is crippled or has surrendered.

Arioch

@Arioch I was just wondering, can assault shuttles be used to board enemy ships while they are maneuvering at full acceleration? In Master of Orion assault shuttles can, and I was wondering if by some bit of techno-wizardry it was possible in universe for this to be accomplished.

Cosmic Pillar

Oh good, was worried for a minute there. Glad to hear that everything is alright.

Cosmic Pillar

Things are fine. Just the usual schtuff.

Arioch

@Arioch hey there m8, is everything all good? Getting excited for the next pages!

Cosmic Pillar

Would it be possible to get an image of a Golim at work? The current Insider image doesnt give much information on what they look like.

RBAWintrow

Gah... I have REALLY Missed the monthly sketch updates for the story... 'Sigh' Now it feels like a step back to the late 90's with long stretches of nothing for the comic.

Sunphoenix72

Why do I suspect we may see an organic ship in the not too distant future?

JasonAW3

The Orgus vessel was a merchant transport. It didn't have weapons or armor.

Arioch

Did... did they at least have some like... I don't know, armor or something? Cause damn, that is a bad position to be in and no mistake.

Cosmic Pillar

The Orgus are marginally more advanced (less than a full tech generation ahead of humanity), and Human engineers are definitely studying the Orgus vessel, but it will take years of development before such efforts bear practical fruit. The Orgus ship didn't have any of the key technologies that humans are missing (taimat reactors, floater drives, screens, or plasma weaponry).

Arioch

Hey Arioch, what kind of tech did the Orgus refugee vessel have? Will that be addressed later in the story?

Cosmic Pillar

Yes, the Umiak did invade Historian space and captured several systems; they are still holding a few of them at the present moment in the story (this can be verified by Loroi Farseers). After the Loroi-Historian alliance, Loroi forces did enter Historian territory to aid in the defense, but there wasn't very much action as the Historians would offer only minor resistance and then retreat further into their territory. The Historians have since recaptured most of this lost territory, but Loroi forces were not present for this and so what the Umiak did with the systems they captured and what they may or may not have learned is known only to the Umiak and Historians at present.

Arioch

Didn't the Umiak invaded & conquered a Historian outer system while trying to flank the Lorei ? If so... the Umiak must have gained Intel & tech from the capture of that Historian Planetary system unless I read or mis-read the last info on why the Historians became co-combatants of the Lorei Alliance against the Umiak Hegemony or something to that effect... meh?

Kclcmdr Kai

I doubt that the Nissek will be fleshed out enough to warrant an article, but anything is possible.

Arioch

Cool, will we get an article on the Nissek as well?

Cosmic Pillar

There isn't a lot about the Historians that's common knowledge in the setting, as they keep to themselves and don't normally permit outsiders in their territory. I think most of what is known is already in the various Insider articles (such as the races list). It's possible that there is some information in the forums that's not yet in the Insider; I'll make a note to check. I may do a full article on the Historians at some point, but at present there's not much to put in there, as there's a lot about them that has yet to be revealed in the story.

Arioch

@Arioch is there any information available on the Historians? Will there be an Insider article on them in the future?

Cosmic Pillar

Historian vessels are armed with an advanced version of the plasma focus. Loroi have seen examples of the weapon firing. Some Loroi forces were present in Historian territory during the latter part of the initial Umiak offensive; even though the engagements were only skirmishes as the allied forces retreated, I have to imagine that at least a few Umiak vessels were destroyed given Umiak tactics.

Arioch

@Arioch have the Historians or Nissek ever been seen firing upon and destroying Umiak & Umiak allied vessels? If so, what weapons do they field?

Cosmic Pillar

There is some discussion of this issue here: https://well-of-souls.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=2517&p=38850&hilit=umiak+altered#p38850

Arioch

@Arioch I saw on the Saren page that the Umiak left behind some terrifyingly altered Loroi, can you elaborate on this please?

Cosmic Pillar

I went the other way and assumed the bugs thought ~~Marisa~~ The Damn Elves Stole The Precious Thing. :P

Carl Miller Jr.

@AriochIV Everything alright? I can't help but get a little worried, since there were no new draft pages on the 1st, and no new posted pages since Christmas. :(

Carl Miller Jr.

Enzin revealing himself may have just saved their lives. Knowing that a live alien (and all of the dead ones) are on board means The Stray might prefer to capture the ship carefully rather than use maximum destructive force.

Frankie

it was probably all the way back in chapter 1? right here? https://well-of-souls.com/outsider/outsider087.html

Ronald Homer

let's see... where was the last time the Umiak talked about this object?

Ronald Homer

The Historians are assumed to have explored most if not all of the Local Bubble, and perhaps beyond. They have unmanned long-range scouts that still wander seemingly at random, carrying messages and just checking on local news. They don't violate the established territory of starfaring nations without permission, but it seems pretty clear that the Historians had already explored everyone's territory long before anyone else had regained starflight.

Arioch

Arioch, I think I read somewhere that Historians pass through other nations territories, is that true? If so, why do other species allow this? Will it be addressed in the comic?

Cosmic Pillar

The only thing the Umiak requests is to engage in confusion

GhostlyYorick

I was surprised they couldn't merely listen in to the lead Umiak broadcast and had to turn on their camera too. But befuddling them is definitely fun.

Alexander Freeman

I presume the Umiak is using the word "object" in the sense of "goal/objective" or possibly "subject verb object" rather than "discrete lump of matter" or "data structure".

Frankie

Seems like Enzin is a *Questionable Object* all around!

Classical Salamander

"change" -> "chance"

David Khoo

Very exciting. Good stuff, Arioch

kaydet

The Umiak have a very long and complex form of expressing "wtf is that??!!"

Pinhead

I have the feeling that this choice is going to come back to bite Alex.

Morgan Olson

I think that's a new land speed spell-check record.

Arioch

“siezes”
