There's lots in the story that I'm looking forward to, but this scene (and, in particular its climax) is definitely something that I've been looking forward to for a long time.

@Arioch, I seem to remember you saying something along the lines of "I have been looking forward to doing this part of the story." That isn't an exact quote, but just the impression I got a while back. Is it the mingling between Alex and the loroi that you have been looking forward to doing? Very much looking forward to that middle panel being finished, and dang it now I have to look up anodyne. Edit: definition is something inoffensive and bland, with a possible noun being medicine or painkiller. Ah, that is interesting. I'm guessing it is mostly just a soothing drink, not meds they are chugging down like Nyquil.

I strongly suspect that they have already set aside some samples for exactly that reason. I also suspect that they have also done some initial analysis already in the medlab onboard the Tempest. Still the Tempest is a warship with an all loroi crew and as such bring rations for them with some extra for guest and prisoners of other KNOWN species. It is possible that the brig are mostly used for their own insubordinate crew members that need to cool down a bit after some violations.

If they get to somewhere safer in Loroi space, and there are some ration packs left, maybe they can have a bio lab do a quick workup on the kinds of carbs and proteins humans can digest and have their food processors make more beef stroganoff.
