Exclusive content: The Retro Reactor - Halloween Knight

Now then, being Halloween, there's treat news and trick news:

The bad news is I wanted to get this to you on Wednesday but I've spent 2 days trying several edit versions of this all with reduced content, and still it gets flagged for copyright on YT due to the TV show footage. I was mostly expecting this. Each time I do a new edit it takes about 2 hours to render, upload, and process, as it's a 45 minute long 4K video. I've tried about 8 different edits now using different techniques, but same result: Blocked.

Legally, "reaction videos" are protected under Fair Use law as a commentary, however I would need to file an appeal under those terms, it can take 7-30 days, and if rejected it risks a copyright strike on the channel; not something I want to chance. I can't even share the unlisted video with you or YT Channel Members. So we can't make this a Public video at the moment.

(This also means we won't get any ad revenue on it, or generate new subscribers from it, and PCBWay may also not offer their usual contribution. Having pressed eject mostly on my previous jobs to focus on Π―R, this income is necessary otherwise the bills don't get paid. I'm still looking for a solution to this style of video, but it may simply be that there isn't one.)

Honestly doing solely exclusive content is something we've toyed with on and off for a while. It would mean no ads, no need for PCBWay integrations, no more pandering to the algorithm with worrying about video length and other things, and no toxicity in comments (we've even received thinly veiled death threats), and more benefits besides.

The thought of making videos solely for an exclusive community as wonderful as you is so tantalising, and a path some have followed with varied results - sometimes successful, sometimes not.

However, being realistic, we'd need to quadruple the Patreon income to cover what we'd lose by going private, and we'd never expect or ask you fine folks to do that. So it's a bit of a non-starter of an idea really. Maybe a different pathway will open up to allow it in the future, but for now this exclusive video is merely a taster, but all yours as part of your membership :)

Moving on to the video itself, I've tried to find a good balance here between making a video that isn't overly long (the actual recording was 1h 15m) whilst still retaining enough so you can follow the plot of the episode itself.

There's some cool things going on behind the scenes here including "auto ducking". For those who may not know, that's where the audio of the TV show automatically reduces whenever we speak. As Final Cut Pro X doesn't do it natively I've used the option that's in Audacity. I say "automatic" but it took half a day to get the settings dialled in to where it worked perfectly. I just didn't want you to have to listen to two or three people talking at once. I think it works well!
