Xiàbān Hòu! - Episode #19 - Rural insanity and Weddings

Comments

Really enjoying this tour of rural China, you would never see this on any travel programme in mainstream media, no matter how 'gritty' they claim to be. It's refreshing to get honest opinions about both the good and bad aspects.

that first song they played in Chinese just repeats 小鸡小鸡小鸡, which mean little chickens, or chicks. This is something they play for kindergarden kids, the level of cringe is off the charts!

I'm finally going through them, stay awesome folks.

Hey guys, wanted to post my superchat from Friday’s show that slipped through the cracks: I basically wanted to say a huge thanks for pointing out the way chinese state media games the system and how it screws over organic content creators on the likes of Facebook, YouTube and Instagram. I make travel content online but these fake accounts that prop up Chinese propaganda, has totally made it impossible to reach beyond my family and friends unless I pay my way up the algorithm. The human cost that Chinese bot farms have on organic content creators like myself is huge, as it’s us that lose out because our content gets pushed down the algorithm. I’m not someone who goes out and begs for followers or subscribers, but it definitely is a bummer as I feel like I do make some decent content and that it will only ever be a hobby to me, so it does feel like a waste. I can only imagine the frustrations of those who are trying to go all in creating an online persona but have their online spaces encroached on by Chinese state media and government officials who don’t even let their people see the stuff they’re posting for foreign audiences. I really wish Meta and YouTube would nuke their content. Nobody cares or wants to see it but now all creators are suffering because they’re stealing all the space. How can anyone hope to make content online these days when the Chinese government is actively making it harder to compete without spending thousands? Love your work as always, and keep weeding out these cripe pages

Hey guys, question from one of the Aussies in your patreon that can basically never make the lives due to time diff: Winston you said you’re a big fan of Hong Kong cinema- wondering if you have heard of ‘Rigor Mortis’ ? Directed by Juno Mak in 2013ish, loved this a lot more than reviews did, check it out if you haven’t.. Do you have any recommendations of HORROR FILMS or director that dipped into thriller or horror from HK? Or if not into horror give me your top couple of movies in the 90’s from HK.

Two questions for Monday's show (11/14). Thanks to you guys I know why there are no real wild birds in China! Is the same true of Pandas? Have you ever been to any of those PR Panda rehab/breeding centres? Also have either of you ever tried traditional Chinese medicine? Is it all snake oil or are there any ligit practitioners? Kudos for all the great, fun and informative shows!

Question for next Friday or Monday‘s episode - Is there an age where normal women transform into 阿姨? Or did they always have the characteristic traits when they were younger, and upon reaching a certain age they all develop a hive mob mentality, and turn into a collective body, leaving no public restroom’s toilet paper reserve unpillaged? Love from Ireland

BTW: You guys did Paris Baguette dirty. PB isn't a mainland chain, they are Korean. Also, their cakes are damn good: much less sweet and lighter than most Western cakes. Yeah, the bread is a lot like you get in most of Asia, but that's not just a mainland thing. For flaky bread in Asia, it's much like you said: Vietnam, Cambodia, HK, Macau, SG, and the Philippines have the goods.

Quick question, what are funerals like in China? Also in the rural villages I’ve been to in China the cemeteries are super interesting, mausoleum type tombs with traditional writing etched into the hills and forests outside the village which really show a respect for the dead, are they holdovers from pre-Mao traditions kept alive in rural areas or a newer thing?

One of my many observations that I like to chip in with: saw Matt quip that China should not be mistaken as a feminist paradise in regards to divorce and womens rights, despite its divorce rate superseding the US. Totally agree with you! That notion of China being a feminist paradise and progressive society for women needs to STOP. The tankies go on about it all the time. I always have to point out to people that China actually ranks BELOW Saudi Arabia of all nations with regards to womens rights. What do you guys think? Am I on the ball here or what?

Let me guess: rural weddings involve motorcycles and dirt!?
