I've seen it as far back as 2003, when working in a physics lab at the University of South Carolina. Two Chinese grad students worked there, too. Only one would talk openly and only when we were alone. The other wasn't very friendly and the one I had a lot of nice chats with would just clam up when the sour one was around. There was a very close knit organization of Chinese professors on campus. In and of itself, there is nothing wrong with that at all. Common language and interests. Just like expat groups everywhere. But there were rumors. Honestly I just don't know if there was any substance or just xenophobic suspicion. The Confucius Institute didn't come to campus until 2008. I was teaching high school and community college classes by then. The CI got the boot from the USC campus a year ago. If they could have kept the propaganda out of it, it would have been nice to have the art, calligraphy, and such available. But that's the type of thing that gave them a hook to appeal to people and allow them to slide their propaganda in unnoticed. I've had my own run-ins with wumao attacks, but they are pretty laughable. Even the vile ones just don't quite get it right. One of them threatened to contact my commanding officer and have me kicked out of the Army. Uh, I retired from the Air Force in 98, so I wasn't too worried. Life's tough when you suck at being a troll and can't get the story right for your empty threats. I hope you get some good stories to work with. Keep up the fantastic work.
