Blog: More NES Chairs & Locks!? (09/19/22 - 09/21/22)
Added 2022-09-22 21:45:30 +0000 UTCHi everyone, and welcome to this weeks blog post! I'm going out of town for a wedding on Friday, so I'm posting the blog a day early. Let's begin!
Super Mario Kart Script Revisions
I've always talked about script revisions, but I have never explained what actually goes into them. Well this week, Kristin & I got a final version of the Super Mario Kart script ready to go. So let me take you into the process.
The first step is that Kristin goes through the entire document (in Google Docs) and gives notes (such as the one above). When we first started working together, I was very defensive about my writing. But now, I can't imagine writing a script without Kristin's help. She cleans up my terrible grammar and sees the video from an outside perspective.
Kristin also cleans up my clunky sentences.
After all of her feedback, I spent a good day rereading my script and making corrections. I read everything out loud, because this will all be narrated on-video. Sometimes sentences read fine in your head, but strange out loud.
For the final step, Kristin & I sit down in my office and edit the script together. I read out loud while Kristin follows along. After each paragraph, we point out any issues we have, correct them, and keep going. This process can take anywhere from 30 minutes (a short video) to a whole afternoon (Super Mario World video). The Super Mario Kart script took us about 2 hours.
With the revisions done, we can officially start production of the Super Mario Kart video!
The NES Chair Auction
A user in the Video Game History Foundation Discord server pointed me to this eBay auction. It's another NES chair!
I decided to message the seller because I was curious how they got ahold of this chair. It was also strange to me that the auction was listed as "nintendo prototype." I don't think a serious collector would use such a nondescript title.
Surprisingly, they messaged me back immediately. The seller bought the chair from a video rental store in the late 90's. They also gave me the name of the product. The Simulator 1 Action Chair!

This chair cost $189 in 1990, which is fairly expensive for a controller. I found a lot of advertisements for the chair from rental stores, so the sellers story does check out. This chair also looks much sturdier than the NES Hot Seat.
The big question is: Do I buy the chair and make a video about it? I feel like I have to! But $1500 is very steep. Maybe I could make an offer? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.
Game Guardian Locks

A fan of the show, Jason, e-mailed me something fun he found on eBay recently: Game Guardian locks! In my Homework First video, I mentioned that other companies came out with their own locks. One company was called "Niche Technologies." However, I could never find evidence that their lock, called "Time Out," ever released. Well, this looks and works just like the "Time Out" lock! It makes me wonder if they changed the name at the last minute, hence why I could never find information on it. They also made a Sega Genesis version. Wild stuff!
I hope you have a great weekend and I will see you on the next blog with Mario Kart production updates!
