Blog: Part 3 edit! The end is near (04/04/22 - 04/08/22)

Monday, April 4th

Today I started editing part three of the video! This section talks about the North American video game market before the Super Nintendo came out and all the wild rumors about the SNES and Super Mario World.

In one part, I talk about Nintendo's 1989 CES show, where they showed a film about how amazing the NES is and how 16-bit consoles were not the future. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any visuals of this event, but several press outlets reported on it. So, that is where illustrations come in handy. I had a pretty good idea of what it might look like, so I sent the above drawing to my artist, Shawn Ulom. He will take my idea and make it look semi-decent!

Anyways, I had a kick-ass day of editing. I anticipate this section to go quickly!

Surprise, more editing! Today, I did a lot of magazine coverage. So I spent most of my day in After Effects doing highlights of pages.

In this screenshot above, we can see a photo of Mr. Nintendo himself, Howard Phillips, checking out the Super Famicom at the 1990 Shoshinkai show! There are more interesting tidbits here: Electronic Gaming Monthly thought the Super Nintendo would be called the "SFX" in North America and be an attachment for the NES rather than a new console.

I am moving right along through part 3. Today I focused on the section where Nintendo first announced the Super Famicom was coming to North America. This image comes from an issue of Nintendo Power that covered the 1991 Winter CES show. Unfortunately, it's pretty tiny in the magazine, so I scanned it at a ridiculous 1200 dpi.

I'm slightly ahead of schedule, so I'm feeling good! I hope everyone had a great hump day.

Thursday, April 7th

Check out this sweet Nintendo merch! I had an old catalog from which I scanned a few photos for this video. Part three editing continued today, and I'm near the end. I'll probably finish tomorrow, then start finalizing everything.

Today, the big event was I found some incredible old news footage of the Super Nintendo. Unfortunately, it costs $$$. I requested a quote, so we will see how much it costs. For the Super Mario Bros. 3 video, I got some footage of Miyamoto and his team working on Mario 3 (or at least pretending to). That cost about 4,000 dollars. Hopefully, this is cheaper.

But once again, none of this is possible without your support. So thank you!

The rough edit of part 3 is done! I'm super happy with how everything turned out. After that, I need to re-record a few lines, adjust the pacing, and add some music. That should take me about two days. Then all I have left is part 4 and the intro!

I always edit the intro last. After spending several weeks editing, I feel like I get a better sense of what the introduction should look like.

Besides finishing the rough edit, I sent out Patreon rewards and cleaned up my office. It was an absolute disaster after this week. Lots of filming took place. I'll probably re-record my narration over the weekend, then jump right back in on Monday.

Have a great weekend, everyone. Take care of yourself!
