Blog: Some new mail and good editing (03/14/22 - 03/18/22)

Monday, March 14th

Notice anything...odd about this screenshot?

So I recorded this footage months ago, but I must have accidentally had some overlay on in the settings. The Elgato software lets you stream as well, so this must have been a pre-built overlay that I accidentally turned on. Needless to say, all of my footage from the Super Famicom version is like this.

So today, I had to re-record everything. Honestly, it wasn't all bad. Any excuse to play through Super Mario World again is fine with me! I just hate that it set me back almost a whole day.

Tuesday, March 15th

I had a fantastic day of editing. I'm about to start on the part where we meet Yoshi for the first time. Moving along nicely!

Wednesday, March 16th

Today was all about Yoshi. I guess I forgot how much Yoshi can do in Super Mario World. He is really just a mega-ultra powerup. He can...

- eat enemies
- stomp enemies
- make Mario jump higher
- walk over rough terrain
- eat berries for extra time, powerups, coins, etc.
- earthquake stomp (with yellow shell)
- temporarily fly (with blue shell)
- shoot fireballs (with red shell)

And then if you get the different colored Yoshis...they can do even more!

Anyways, Yoshi is cute and fun and I'm so happy he became such a big part of the series.

Tomorrow, I edit the section on Koji Kondo.

Thursday, March 17th

Today I worked on the section about Koji Kondo and composing for the Super Famicom. I had very limited footage and images of Kondo I could use, so I had to get a little creative. In the screenshot above, I am comparing a music track on the Famicom compared to the same track on the Super Famicom (the track is the battle music from Mario 3/Mario All-Stars). I think it does a nice job highlighting the upgrade in sound design that the Super Famicom provided to developers.

Friday, March 18th

I got some new stuff in the mail!

- In the top left, we have Super Mario World for the Game Boy Advance. I make a brief mention of it in the video, so I bought a copy for filming purposes.

- In the top center is Pilotwings. This was a launch title in North America, so I wanted to get some b-roll shots of it.

- In the top right is F-Zero, another launch title. I needed it for the same reason as Pilotwings.

- And finally, I bought a collection of Retro Gamer magazines. I really just needed one issue (The Top 150 Games issue, which Super Mario World took the #1 spot), but I won't complain about extra magazines!

I'd say I'm about 2 days away from finishing Part two. But I'll save that for next week. Enjoy your weekend!
