Topic Vote: Video Game Lawsuits! (No Nintendo)
Added 2016-07-18 16:24:57 +0000 UTCHello everyone,
It's time to vote on another topic. I always love covering lawsuits, but I figured it was time to cover something that didn't involve Nintendo. I present to you 3 court cases within the video game industry.
Atari vs. Philips - After Atari acquired the license to Pac-Man for home consoles, Philips quickly created a clone called "KC Munchkin" to beat them to stores. Atari sued, and it was one of the first cases of copyright infringement in video games.
Sega vs. Accolade - Unhappy with Sega's licensing terms, Accolade found a way to play unlicensed games on the Genesis and sold them in stores. The case helped establish what is considered fair use in reverse engineering.
Sony vs. Bleem! - In 1999, a piece of software called Bleem! was released that allowed consumers to emulate Playstation games on their PC or Dreamcast. Sony quickly sued, stating that allowing consumers to play Playstation games on other platforms created unfair competition.
